I really don't understand the outrage.
Two people means twice as many towels, twice as much trash, twice as much water usage, twice as much wear and tear on carpet, upholstery, and mattresses, and pillows, twice as much opportunity to break something, etc., etc. And if using two beds (which even couples sometimes do in hotels), twice the sheets and pillows.
Other costs are increased not quite by twice (electricity, TV), and some not at all (like if you use the bed). But clearly, there is an increase of expenses on the hotel's part.
In fact, I wonder if the additional expenses might not be fully covered by the extra charges?
Maybe it's the single traveler who should be outraged -- for paying inflated single rates that subsidize all us couples and families!
(And yes, I did just post in the other thread that I always book for one no matter how many are staying. But that doesn't mean I see the rates as outrageous. I also mentioned tipping generously -- sometimes close to the extra rate amount.)
