I'd move to a new property, not just a new room.

Yikes.

Also, I'd write to the Diamond Desk about this. Properties need to be proactive about this stuff.

Finally, full disclosure please! What is the property?

I am not 100% sure if the night FD employee told the GM. Housekeeping could have just put the headboard back up and flipped the room if they weren't told.
Since you're not sure if it was addressed, I'd go talk to the manager at the front desk. I'd do it face to face, so you can make your true intentions clear - that you're looking to make sure the issue has been addressed and in no way want any compensation. In the event they weren't informed, I'm sure they'd be more than appreciative.

I would definitely inform the day staff. I'd also be tempted to move to another hotel. If they're in one room, they could all too easily be in another.

I'd be out of there justlikethat (unless my only other option was the KOA Kampground...)

If you get those bugs in your luggage, then your house, they're hell on wheels to exterminate.

Don't give hotel name, but room number. I want to make sure I avoid that room regardless of the hotel. :D

I'd report it here

I agree. I pull the bed apart and look for bugs in any room I stay in prior to setting my luggage down. I do not want these unwanted guests in my home.

Personally I'd notify GM. Ask to be transferred to new hotel, all at their expense. Then I notify Health Department. If my expenses weren't covered I'd contact local news. JMO

I would also make sure the hotel management knows about this. As with any business, no one would intentionally want to harm a customer, and by pointing out your experience, you help avoid a potential bad experience for another guest.

I could not stay there in that hotel anymore. I don't think I'd be able to sleep well. If they're in one room, they can easily be in another room.

I would have moved to a different hotel, not just a different room. I - and my DH - live in fear of me bringing home bedbugs. :(

And yes, please report this on the bedbugs registry site.

Management needs to communicate

No doubt in my mind that after the OP's complaint either the executive housekkeper or general manager should have contacted the OP to explain how they resolved the bed bug situation, failing that they don't deserve your business I would get out of there pronto. And it sure would not hurt to through some HH miles your way for the trouble of having to change rooms.

AK-business-traveler Jun 2, 2011 10:04 am

I'd change hotels too! In a heartbeat. And I also agree that you should contact the manager to ensure he / she is aware of and taking appropriate action to address the situation.

So..... which hotel is it? And did you get bitten??

smitherino Jun 2, 2011 10:30 am

As someone who worked in a hotel I have a question. What do you think a hotel should be doing about bedbugs? We inspect rooms, have a bug detecting dog, put rooms out of order, deep clean & spray pesticides and then inspect again before putting the room back in order. Then the very next guest can bring in the bugs again. We've found bed bugs living behind headboards and living on the ceiling. The pest guy said they live behind outlets, in clocks & phones, behind drawers, under the carpet, behind walls. The health department was contacted after the first instance, her attitude was "welcome to the party." As long as you have a plan to deal with them after they are found, getting them is not a concern of theirs.

The dirty little secret in the hotel industry: every hotel has or is in between having bedbugs. All of them. You can't avoid staying in a hotel that has bedbugs. You have to try to reduce the risk of taking them home.

Another question, how willing would people be to take the smell test? A hotel has to be certified bed bug free. Then before you check in a bedbug detecting dog sniffs you and your stuff. If bedbugs are found, no room for you. That way the hotel stays bedbug free and other guests can feel safe.

OP, I know you're trying to be nice about this, but I agree with the consensus here: Make sure the hotel GM knows, move to another hotel at the Hilton's expense, report this info at the bedbug registry site so potential guests concerned with this can find out, and please spare fellow FTers by letting us know which hotel this is.

wbl-mn-flyer Jun 2, 2011 10:34 am

No word back from the OP so I decided to look at his recent posts.

Was it the Hilton Garden Inn in Katy, Texas?
Or was it the Las Vegas Hilton?
