Hilton Miami Airport - Bed Bugs!!!
Long story short. Spent 3 days and 2 nights in the Hilton Miami Airport last weekend. Came back home with bed bug bites all over my legs!!!!!
Friend of mine who was with me thought that the bite marks were from the mosquitoes. ...!!!!! I am so angry and freaked out. If I get new bites while at home Hilton will pay for the professionals to remove them and for new mattresses. ...??? Just a warning to anyone planning on staying there. |
Sorry for your dilemma. A large number of hotels in the US (and undoubtedly elsewhere) are experiencing problems with bedbugs; they seem to be on the increase.
You may want to register your experience with the bed bug registry here. |
JDiver thanks for the link. This hotel is already on the list and management claims that they don't have bed bugs. My legs can argue on this issue.
At least 5 bites on each leg below the knees. Everything that I had with me on this trip is soaking in very hot water in the bathtub. Hoping that the chemicals will kill the bugs (if I brought any). Thanks again. |

A cycle in the dryer at high heat will do the trick. Those suckers die at 140F. I'd be less concerned about your clothes than I would about your bag.
No bites elsewhere, though? Might not be bed bugs.... Also, since I was traveling with the duffel bag its soaking with it too :) As for the bites. Mostly my legs under the knees and couple of bites on my hand. My traveling companion has also bites on the legs. I've been reading a lot about those bugs and all the symptoms look positive. Bite mark colors, few in the same area etc. I would never thought that it could happen in such a nice hotel. Thanks for the tips :) |

btw does anyone know why only North America is affected so far (well I know American and Canadian travellers are bringing bed bugs now to Europe...). I am really interested to know the reasons... |

Call the hotel and speak to the manager. Give the room number and the date and ask politely that he/she take remedial action. No hotel is going to publicly admit they are infested and it's probably on a room-by-room basis anyway. I've stayed at that property many times, as recently as last month, and never had a problem (I have elsewhere :( ) so it simply is a question of bad luck. Always check the room before moving in: http://insects.about.com/od/insectss...el-rooms_3.htm |
Bedbugs in Room - Compensation?
It is making me itch to even write this, but I wanted to see if anyone had any experience with compensation in this situation. I checked into a Hampton on Monday evening, went to the gym and dinner. Came back and was pulling back the covers to do my normal bug check (and I never unpack my stuff- always sits on the luggage rack) and saw a bug crawling on the side of the mattress (in the crease). I scooped it up in a piece of paper and then looked at it under my reading glasses (magnifiers).
It looked like every bedbug I've ever seen, so I put it in a pouch and took it to the front desk. Calmly explained, said I wanted to move, etc. The manager on duty came and apologized and got me a room at another property in town. He said I would get the night at the HI comped under the 100% satisfaction policy, and then gave me cash for the night at the new hotel. He then stated that he would check with HHonors about giving me points for the inconvenience, since I had basically gotten a wash at this point (and it was 11:30PM). Has anyone ever received additional compensation for a similar situation? Not trying to be greedy, but try to get a little more out of it than a "Sorry 'bout ya, here's a new room." |
Not going to lie, it sounds like the MOD did everything right. What more did you want? Did he put you up at some 20.00/night hourly motel 6 or something?

Oh, man, I'm grabbing the popcorn for this one. In the meantime...
The MOD comped you the night, gave you money for the new hotel and offered to look into getting you points for the inconvenience? I'm pretty sure that a free room night and an offer to see about points is a good deal. Mike |
1. It was not a night at a comparable property
2. This wasn't the first time I'd had to move rooms in this hotel due to dirtiness (you might ask why I continued to stay there - when there's one joint in town, options are limited) 3. I'm fine with what I got, but I feel like I essentially ended up at a wash because I was at a crappier hotel, and wasted an hour dealing with the front desk to secure a new room, etc. |
What hotel were you at and where did you get moved to?
