The most commonly posed question about the new food/beverage benefit, which is now extended through the end of 2022, is how it works for multi-night stays. Here's what we do & don't know:
  • The credit does not accumulate over the duration of your stay. For instance, if you stay for 2 nights at a $15/night property, you cannot use the benefit toward a single $30 purchase at one time.
  • Thus, the credit for a given day may only be used on that day. It expires afterward.
  • Unfortunately, Hilton has offered no clear explanation of what qualifies as a "day." (FAQ 24 purports to give an answer, but makes no sense.)
    • Some properties reportedly apply a "calendar day" rule. For a stay arriving Monday and departing Wednesday (two nights, ergo two credits), this means the credit is available only on Monday (first credit) and Tuesday (second credit), with no option for breakfast use on Wednesday.
    • Other properties don't use midnight as the cutoff, but instead allow use of a day's credit until the bar/restaurant closes, even if that occurs early the next calendar day (say, 1am). This interpretation also precludes use for breakfast on the day of departure.
      • Neither of these approaches makes logical sense, given that on a one-night stay the credit may be used either on day of arrival or day of departure, per FAQ 8.
    • A few properties reportedly use the standard checkin or checkout time as the dividing line: guest arriving Monday has until noon or 3pm Tuesday to use the first day's credit (or whatever the checkin/checkout times for that property are).

If you have a 5 nights stay booked, do you get the credit applied daily, so you could use it all at once on the last day, or is it per day, use it or lose it.

Personally, I am Marriott platinum and Hilton diamond, and have switched all travel to Marriott as you still get lounge access and breakfast in restaurant if no lounge.

If they really meant choice, instead of degarding Diamond status, they would offer the choice of $ amount or restaurant, but I think they already did that, so choice is bs.

The latter. See FAQ #7 in the wiki.

I really don't understand Hilton's insistence on treating both Diamonds and Gold the same with the breakfast benefit

For much of the market beyond North America and the UK, Gold customers are pretty valuable to the hotels and are far more likely to be generated by the valued domestic/regional customer base filling beds and restaurants than Diamonds from further away.

Agreed. Wish Hilton would realize that $12 a days is a joke to cover less than half of many breakfast buffets. Much is my business is going to Hyatt over that.

Agree. And I think Hilton is the only chain to give a mid-tier breakfast and shot at exec level upgrades.

Outside of the added points and the free "premium" wifi not much difference in treatment in the US. The diamond force is a joke, upgrades rarely exist, no later guaranteed check out, and most US lounges don't exist anymore.

Even pre=covid the breakfast benefit has always been a lot better at Hyatt than most Hiltons in the US since it was always a full breakfast for two if there is no lounge.

A lot of my stays go to Hyatt for the guaranteed suite upgrade and the 4 p.m. guaranteed checkout.

I don't understand why others that are so upset with this chance just don't do what we are doing and vote with their wallet and start giving the business to other chains and go for status with Marriott or Hyatt instead where they'll get a decent breakfast plus a guaranteed 4 p.m. check out

That's why, long, long ago, I picked Hilton to be the focus of my travel. It clearly had the best mid-tier and I was not traveling enough to have a shot at any chain's high tier. Hilton used to have a wonderful feature whereby you could trade airline miles for Hilton points and then use those points for the GLON award. Those of you too new to know what GLON was can find many threads mentioning it. Read 'em and weep at what you never got to experience.

I used to have no trouble getting airline miles to exchange for the Hilton points because long distance phone companies used to give miles away like candy for doing things that cost little or nothing, and you could repeat, repeat, repeat. Those were the days.

I remember when I was only gold with Hilton years ago, I got better treatment in the US than I do now as a diamond but that was back in the days before they handed out status like candy.

I miss the double dipping days and getting 1/2 southwest credit per stay. I really miss the promo they used to have late in the year where you got bonus hilton miles plus I believe 1000 MQMs per stay. One year they had the promo where you got a free night certificate after so many stays (was a pretty minimal number for each stay). I was travelling a lot back then and would hotel hop every night for the delta mqms and to get the most free night certs. Between the free night certs, the Delta MQMs and bonus miles and the Hilton points from my car rental (and I also think they were running a triple point promo that quarter also) I did really good. I really miss the diamond force on award stays. There were a couple years I got the Double Tree times square suites for like 50K points a night on new years eve when rooms were going for well over $1K a night.

Southwest used to have a generous program as well. I would only fly them DTW/BNA or DTW/MDW once in a while on a paid ticket for work and they were lucky to get four paid flights a year from me and I got at least 15 free flights a year just from their credit card and Hilton stays and rental cars. When that program went bye-bye so did me flying southwest.

Hilton had made getting Gold pretty easy even 20 years ago. But riding the hotel program was less common for hotel guests as the proportion of hotel guests signed up for the loyalty program was much much lower then than it has come to be in the years since.

As and with the death of the 100k-150k points for a 6-night award stay basically anywhere in the portfolio (as a Silver, Gold or Diamond), so with the more rapid disappearance of US Hilton lounges. Once a hotel chain jumps onto one big cost-cutting approach for the benefit of the hotel owners and/or itself, additional cost-cuts tend to more quickly follow and hit the hotel guests.

Hilton further cutting costs of the Gold and Diamond breakfast benefit in at least some market(s) is probably not out of the picture. One way to pull that off would be for Hilton to follow in the footsteps of Hyatt and Marriott in making a new status tier arrangement to replace the existing one and adjust the benefits matrix (to cut the proportion of hotel guests who are eligible for a hotel breakfast benefit on the bass of loyalty program status). It’s a cost-cutting approach used before by travel service provider loyalty programs and likely to be repeated in some way by the very Hilton that gives away Diamond status for qualified credit card holders.

Remarkable that it was possible to get 6 nights at top properties for the price of one today. Admittedly, the quality of those premier hotels is better now, but the program devaluation is still striking.

All true, but then you couldnt get 150K points from a single SUB back in the day.

Just wanted to add a DP about using the credit after checking out. Stayed at the Doubletree San Bernardino this past weekend and was able to get lunch on my check-out day credited automatically, after already having checked out.

I think Hilton SUBs top out at 180K staggered now. It is also very easy to farm free night certificates. No idea what it was like before but Hilton is still a good program for earn and burn.

I can finally add a meaningful datapoint. This was for HGI Denver Downtown.

In essence you can have a reasonably comprehensive continental breakfast as a Diamond. In addition to the following, there were muffins, scones/biscuits, bagels, oatmeal and a fresh fruit basket, as well as some other cereals. The marmite spread was an illegal import, so ignore that, but there was the usual jams/jelly and honey as well as 2 types of soft cheese.

There would normally be a set of hot options, at a higher price, however their morning chef had resigned and they were in the middle of trying to recruit a new chef. This seems a city wide problem in Denver at the moment, even the homeless are being press-ganged into the many vacant hospitality jobs, or at least the more amenable ones.

This was the bill, so this would have been fine within the US$10 limit, which was explained on check in. I then rounded it up to US$12 or US$13 with a tip, one of the breakfast staff was far more engaged than the other.

When I checked out, they first offered to settle up instantly. I mentioned that I was concerned about the breakfast credit, and the front desk staff then stared more closely at the folio, and immediately stripped out the full breakfast costs, whether US$12 or US$13. So I don't feel I can complain too much, given the room rate was something below US$100 per night. That was all sorted out in under a minute, but my suspicion is that had I done the default checkout I would then have had to rectify it by email later.

HGI Goleta offers $10/day/person =$20. Must use each day.
I said that I hoped this would end on 12/31, but the manager said, "it will last at least through March, 2022."

Ugh!
