I consider that it is crazy that we have to leave tips in the room because Hilton, Marriott,...do not pay decent salaries to the staff cleaning the rooms.

I only leave tips when we stay at the Conrad NY with Mrs m4l and our daughters(in total 4 people), and it is true that, up to now, it has make a difference getting extra towels and extra coffee capsules/toiletries.

You don't "have" to do anything.

I'm grateful I'm able to stay in nice hotels and don't mind sharing a few bucks with very low wage staff who cleans my room.

It is a good way of seeing it Kacee.

Up to now my donations to charity go through more classic channels.

Do you do it also outside of the United States?

I hope that hotel chains do not reduce further the wages when they find out that more and more people leave tips in the rooms

Putting tip out on the open on the nightstand is what I do. I share Kacee's sentiment, although i will admit that I have had times for on that last morning of my stay, I am in a rush and just don't have lower denomination bills and don't leave anything and I tend to feel like a scad in those situations. (I rarely travel overseas so this is all US hotels)

Conrad New York has a pretty solid housekeeping staff and yes, the tip seems to get you extra everything (basically double toiletries at the least)

Why even do that? Seems like you can get "more4less" by just calling housekeeping and asking for more towels. You are paying for a room and Hilton/Marriott should include that with your room rate

I do not do it to get the extra towels,...which is also nice, but because I consider that staying 4 in the room means making 2 beds,...so some extra work load

Then you are faced with the dilemma of whether to tip when they bring the stuff to you room.

Thought experiment:
Step 1: when first checking-in (before any chance to interact with housekeeping) is the room clean? Are there enough towels and "free" toiletries?

Step 2: If you don't tip, would the quantity of towels and toiletries drop? Would the cleanliness drop?

(Coming from outside the US some of these tipping scenarios are, well, quite weird...)

This is really veering well off anything Hilton related

I'm going to go ahead and close the thread, if you search trouble because you'll see many threads on tipping.
To be honest most hotel related threads on tipping Wind up being very general threads.
