I have been happy with my Hilton experience and did not expect to ever change loyalties. I like the perks I get from being a Gold member. Don't stay in hotels a whole lot like some of you guys, only about 25 night a year. That's enough to get Hilton Gold.
The current Marriott Q4 promotion is so much better than the Hilton one that I have decided to give my business to Marriott for a few month. Already cancelled a Hilton reservation and booked Marriott instead. Two stays next week and then a reward night in India.

Testing this is a great idea.
Since I am in the minority here (as you state), I plan to test this myself within the next week.
I will def. report back on what happens and if anyone else here test this, if they can report what happens that would be great as well.
I do not believe the hotel can change any information on your hhonors account for you without calling hhonors. And your points and miles are based on the information and how you have your hhonors account number set at midnight the day of checkout.
This is gonna be a great test.^^

I should expand on that. Last year in the 3 month long Q4 promo I earned 3 free nights. This year's 2 month promo gives me so little that I can't be bothered counting it up.
This year I've had to stay at Hyatts a couple of times. They're not so bad. They may want to earm my business more than Hilton wants to keep it. Hilton rep, if you're out there, please tell the powers that be that some Diamond in NC is hoping to see a massively less discouraging promo for Q1 of 2013.

This month is the worst month in years for loyal Hilton customers. There is basically no bonus at all this month, and a lame 1000 ppn for November and December.
Hyatt has my business for the rest of the year.

Agreed. Other than one work trip in November where the company is forcing me to stay with Hilton, all of my remaining paid trips for the year have been booked with Marriott.

All of my paid stays for the rest of the year are with MR for their promo.
If Hilton had come up with something semi-competitive then they would have had my nights.

50k for 4 stays is good enough promo for me
While the "1000 reasons..." promo is rather lame, I did switch some of my stays from IC to the Hilton due to their airline promos - in my case AA. 4 stays, normal points (+miles) + 50k points after the 4th stay. I'm good. They also offer HH Gold status upfront, but I have it already.

I'm The First!!
I didn't think I could be any more underwhelmed by Hilton this month but...
I just received an email with this subject line: "You're invited: Be the first to find out about the 1,000 Reasons promotion from HHonors."
a) I'd learned about this "promotion" weeks ago here on FT.
b) I already registered.
c) I've already moved all my nights for the quarter over to Marriott, and am 6/9 through my Platinum challenge.
I'm eternally optimistic though. I actually opened the email, thinking that maybe there would be some kind of unexpected bonus in there.
Nope.
Oh well, so far Marriott front desk people are much better at acknowledging elite status than Hilton - so this may turn out to be a long-term relationship.

you might wanna update your reading on the post you sent me to.
I posed the question in that thread for clarification and those posters say
exactly what I have been posting here.
What has posted to their accounts have been what was set on their hhonors account (Virgin Atlantic set as preferred and earning style set to points and fixed or variable miles) and by midnight the day of check out.
Just thought you might wanna know. ^
