Booked C this past weekend at MLB, drove off with a Ford Fusion tagged as F. It's beyond me how it was a full-size, especially now that the Taurus is entering the fleet. Maybe it'll be down-classified back to a D soon. Not gonna complain too much though as I was expecting a Corolla.

That used to be the Standard (D) class label car; now it's the Altima coupe. This is the first instance I've ever actually seen a car down-classified. Hope this becomes a trend

US fleet list for Hertz

Funny rental today at DTW. I booked G carfirmation first said Lincoln Towncar but I guess I wasn't fast enough so they switched me to a Ford Taurus with no extras. I didn't know once I got there because my Internet on phone wasn't working. I checked the key tag and it said F. I went to the gold counter I said there must have been some kind of a mistake. They said Taurus will be the new G. Yeah right. Well I asked for Buick Regal (key tag says YF) which I got after some waiting. I didn't want the Lincoln anyway, second time they wanted to put me in one of those. Besides the naked Taurus Hertz has been really good to me.

2012 VW Jetta is a YC (corporate). (Licensees consider them an F, per the key tag.)

2012 Hyundai Santa Fe is a L.

That's horrible, I heard Avis made the Taurus a G and I was happy Hertz hadn't done that (yet). I'm still hoping it was a fluke or maybe it'll be just at specific locations...

Is this the 2012 or 2013 Taurus? And Taurus SE trim, not Limited?

The 2013 Taurus Limited is a PCAR with National.

haha... In Canada they give out base Altima's as Full Size... I'd take anything over that

I had a Taurus last year from Avis although I booked Standard. Asked him when I returned what the real class was, he said they were going out as Premiums. But the one I had was a Limited I think. Had Leather, Sync, all kinds of goodies. It was at least as Premium as a Regal I'd say, which is also going out that way from Hertz now.

Base Taurus as G, though, I don't know. Sounds a little fishy to most I'm sure.

Base Altimas as F, that happens all over the US too, not just in Canada.

3.5 wk rental at IAD?

I'm gonna rent a car for our vacation on June 1 (IAD-IAD). Anyone any idea what to expect at IAD? Booked PCAR via travel agent, which unfortunately also leaves me out for online check-in. Since it is pre-paid from Europe it is kind of all-inclusive, so I expect to get something pretty basic. Any idea if there is a way to choose or request a special type? Up to now I just have experience with NationalAlamo, and they have their choice line - anything similar at Hertz IAD?
Does anyone know if the premium (G?) cars are all with leather? At least that is what I would expect from a premium car.
Still another question: Had the Grand Marquis last year for 3 days - was pretty cool (we Europeans do not really get a lot of chances to drive an V8 ) - but I'm not sure for 3.5 weeks. Would a TownCar be a better deal and is the CrownVic "worse" than the Marquis? I'm asking because I fear they will try to palm one off on me...
Are chances good for a Lacrosse or an MKS/MKZ (are there any at all)? My wife would like to get a Yukon but i think that will not work out for a free upgrade and I'm not willing to pay for a 3.5 wk upgrade (after all we still have to pay for the "other things" of the vacation)

Thanks in advance...

You're not missing much with missing out on online check-in, just go to the desk and they try to sell you extra insurance and LDW and sometimes upsell too, takes all of 5 minutes when there's no line.

For a Premium (G, PCAR), you're looking at either a Nissan Maxima, Buick LaCrosse, Buick Regal, Ford Crown Vic or Mercury Grand Marquis.

The Crown Vic and Grand Marquis are both based on the Ford Panther platform and are mechanically identical, as is the Town Car (H/YH, LCAR). Inside, they're all very similar -- big cabin, leather seats, no high-tech gimmicks, and a huge trunk. The Crown Vic has a bench in the front so it's capable of holding 6 people. The downside to all of these is that their gas mileage sucks (I averaged 19 mpg in a Crown Vic back in February). The only reason the Lincoln is "better" than the Mercury, and the Mercury is "better" than the Ford, is simply the brand name. If you cover the logo with a piece of paper you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

There's no guarantee you'll get leather in any of the other options (Maxima or LaCrosse) except the Regal. The MKZ is a LCAR also so that would be a full one-class upgrade, so don't count on it unless you pay for it (or if you have status, or if your travel agent is really good)

Don't count on a Yukon either, at least not for free. How many people/how much stuff will you have? A Yukon is a LOT bigger than most Premium cars...

Well, we'll be just the two of us (with 3 rather biggish suitcases), so basically no need for a really big car. Although being able to put all cases in the trunk would not be too bad. We will be on a round trip for most of the time. Had also an Impala last year, who could swallow some big load as well, but not the same amount like the Grand Marquis :-) - never seen such a trunk before! Downside of the panther cars is that 1980 low tech in some parts... a weird combination of old and new... I am not too concerned about the fuel, since compared to our gas prices at home the US is still rather cheap (currently we are at around EUR 1.59 per l for premium, which is about USD 6 per gallon).
Concerning the Yukon - I am German. We all want to drive big V8 trucks when we come to the states. And have them upgraded for free from a C class booking. :-D

Btw - does Hertz have vehicles to choose - similar to Alamo's/National's choice line? The guy just said to me "Full Size cars are on the left, you can take any of them you like".

Whoo, and another question that comes to my mind: Does Hertz also "strip" cars? We had a Charger two years ago which was kind of nice, but it appeared to me that Alamo even ordered it with less than standard features.

Ah I see... if you can get it then by all means go for it! Hope you don't have to park on the street though as that could be a problem (since it's so big).

Yeah, it's called "Gold Choice" -- when you book midsize or higher you can choose any of the vehicles in the Gold Choice area (there will be signs); some specialty vehicles will say how much more they cost per day. You need to be a Hertz Gold member to take advantage of this. More info here.

Yes When booking a PCAR you can expect a stripped down/baseline Maxima.

Us Europeans currently pay approx $8.30 for gas ( when converted to US gals ) so when we are in the USA we really don't mind big old V8 cars that do 16 mpg

Bingo! ^ Although I have to say I was somewhat impressed by the Grand Marquis. I think it needed less gas than the Impala I had after it.
@jzweighaft: Unfortunately I do not yet qualify for Gold membership. Well, let's see what the counter will bring forward to us. Maybe we'll meet a nice person there

Got a Chrysler 300 yesterday, marked as I. I think it was an upgrade from a premium rental.
