Mesa Airlines connections: How much time do I Really need!

I am inbound from LAX to HNL. Arrive at 9:13pm. Want to book with Mesa Airlines, GO!, on their 9:35 to LIH. They said I need minimum 90 but they advise 2 hours. What do you think? The only other choice is Hawaiian Air that leaves at 9:45 and cost 50 more per person.

Can I make the connection....with my luggage>

With a 9:13 p.m. arrival, anything shorter than 10:13 p.m. is cutting it too close if you're flying go! (1) Flights arriving that late in the day from the West Coast may be delayed, since the plane is usually coming in from points farther east (e.g., the plane may start in Florida, take a stop in the eastern hub city of the airport, then get to LAX for the HNL flight--that's a lot of time for a delay to build up). (2) go! flies out of the commuter terminal, which you should allow a few more minutes to get to. (3) Bags require at minimum 75 minutes to make it out there (although some report 45 minutes is enough for bags... albeit on Hawaiian). You wouldn't want your luggage not to make it on the last flight of the night, since you'll be bagless for a night. (4) Even assuming your flight arrives on time, think about how much time it takes for you to get off your flight. Add another 15 minutes to run from one gate to another terminal. (5) go! requires you to be at the gate 15 minutes prior or your tickets may be canceled. Finally and most importantly, what are you going to do if you miss your flight? Since you're booking two tickets, go! is under no obligation to put you up in a hotel or rebook you on HA.

6) go! is known for regularly canceling the last flight of the day with no notice. Just part of their shoddy business practices (a search in the Hawaii-based Airlines fourm will yield a wealth of info on that topic).

I would suggest either booking your inter-island flight as part of your ex-mainland ticket, trying to figure out a way to have a longer connection, or overnight at one of the two decent (nothing luxurious, but decent for overnighting at the airport) hotels near HNL and fly inter-island the next morning.

Couple of quick Hawaiian / United questions:

We're flying KOA- HNL on Hawaiian and UAL from HNL to DEN all on a single ticket / code share. We go to Kona annually but usually fly direct to and from KOA.

1. Will we have to pay luggage fees from KOA to HNL (I'm a United 1K and don't pay fees on United flights). Since this is a code share, will I still have to pay $10/bag?

2. Do we check in with Hawaiian or United in Kona (after clearing ag inspection)?

3. How can I get my Hawaiian inter-island seats preassigned? Just call Hawaiian?

Mahalo,

hans

1. Don't know. Suspect you'll be paying the fee since HA does not recognize any of UA's status perks.

2. Hawaiian -- they can print both boarding passes. But you may want to re-print in HNL at the airside kiosk or RCC if you want status to show. I've had mixed results on codeshares getting the partner airline's printed bp to show the other carrier's status.

3. Either call, or wait until <24 hours at OLCI.

Typically, fees are collected on the first leg - so as long as you check through to KOA, no fees outbound. BUT... on the return, you're going to pay HA's new inter-island baggage fee

Always the carrier who's metal it is - so HA (which is why you pay the baggage fee )

One thing to check - dk about KOA, but depending on the time your flight leaves, make sure that you arrive before the agricultural station closes. Had this happen to me once at JHM. If it's closed, they can't check your bags through to the mainland - you have to claim, recheck and re-clear security in HNL.

In theory, yes. In practice, I've never been able to pre-assign inter-island seats when connected to a different airline's PNR. That said, it's a short flight, and I've never had any issues getting reseated (together) at the gate.

The real fun is on the way back. DK how the inter-airline cooperation is with UA, but the last time I flew HA->CO, I was unable to OLCI, and HA was not able to check some of us in for the CO segments. Never figured out what they did - I had called co.com support and the elite desk from OGG, they couldn't resolve the issue. Fortunately the CO CSR at the PC club in HNL was able to sort it all out.

hans: The Hawaiian air website has a little more functionality. If you call UA and ask what the HA confirmation number is, you might be able to change that seat online after entering in te confirmation number.

Same principle on your return: just gate-check, pick up plane-side at HNL, Tell the ramp agent that you have a connecting mainland flight so that you don't go into baggage claim and instead are escorted to the "tunnel" to stay airside to the inter-island terminal...
The above good advice was given in October 2009. Just talked with Island Air about tomorrow's flight and they told me that we had to exit the main terminal, take the Wiki Wiki (?) shuttle, get off at the Commuter Terminal, re-clear security and then go to Island Air.

I am hoping that cblaisd's original suggestion still works and we can get to the commuter terminal via the InterIsland terminal. (We are coming in from SFO on AA39) Can someone confirm this?

Sorry no one responded to you. I hope it's not too late. You should check in with the airline actually flying the flight. They will print out boarding passes for all your flights, but my experience is that (in this case) UA may print you out another when you arrive at the UA gate for your flight to ORD. You will arrive at the inter-island terminal in HNL (from (OGG). There is a shuttle to the main terminal (or you can walk it in 15 minutes or so). There are signs and maps posted about the terminal.

Connections Times @ HNL: If Miss Connection, What Happens Next?

Greetings,

I purchased two tickets on HA for a flight from KOA to LIH stopping in HNL. We have to change planes as usual. I purchased an HA option that the flight from KOA arrives HNL at 2:28 p.m. and the flight for LIH departs HNL at 3:11 p.m. A 43 minute connection time. It should not be a problem. But I started to think so I have a question or two.

If our flight out of KOA is running late and we miss our flight to LIH, I am sure HA will put us on the next available flight. At no fault of ours, would we be charged extra?

I will be checking in for both flights at KOA. If our flight out of KOA is arriving a tad late into HNL, if, at what time would HA give away our seats?

Most times I piurchase tickets that have a longer connection time. In the whole scheme of things, is 43 minutes too tight of a connection?

I have had as short as 25 minute inter-island connections on HA when purchased on one ticket.

Are you on one ticket? (i.e., your KOA-HNL-LIH itin was purchased not as two separate tix?)

If so, HA will protect you on a later flight.

I don't know what their policy is re two separate tix, but I suspect you won't be charged, but I don't know.

For the most part, HA's inter-island schedule is really pretty dependable.

You should have no trouble making a 43 minute interisland connection. In the highly unlikely event your KOA-HNL flight is seriously delayed, HA would put you on a later flight to LIH at no charge.

Thanks for the quick replies. I was just alittle concerned as my travel date got closer. As previously mentioned, we have never had a connection time that close.

Cblaisd, yes, KOA-LIH is one ticket. It was one of the option offered by HA online. Originally, the connection time was less than 30 minutes. Since they released their new schedule, the time increased to 43 minutes.

These are first class tickets, which I got a descent price when compared to coach. One thing I learned, all first class tickets are not equal. haha

OGG to Mainland via HNL

I have a return flight from OGG to HNL on go! then a flight from HNL to AUS on AA. I know HA can check my bags all the way through because they are codeshare. Can go! check my bags all the way through as well?

Thanks
