//TOPIC CHECK - STAY ON TOPIC//

Aloha - as a reminder to all, FT's rules specifically state: "FlyerTalk exists for the discussion of frequent flyer programs and the related travel experience. With the exception of the few areas specifically designated for the discussion of other topics, confine your comments as closely as possible to these topic areas and to the topic of the thread and forum in which you are posting." FlyinHawaiian and I recognize that it is easy to intertwine political commentary with the policies advanced by politicians that affect travel to Hawaii. However, we ask that you keep in mind the nature of this Hawaii forum and focus your attention on the policies and their impact on travel to/from/within Hawaii. Commentary about Hawaii's politicians are off-topic, belong in the OMNI forum, and will be deleted if posted on this thread. We ask for your kokua and cooperation. If you have any questions, please let us know.

Also check-in on the hotel website to make sure they plan to reopen. They were going to reopen this month but pushed it to September 1. I know people that had reservations there for mid September and they got the call they're canceled, so I suspect they're going to stay closed at least into October.
Once again, you are wrong— Vet services were deemed essential during the lockdown. Elective procedures were suspended.

So you're saying that a vet has to look him over when we arrive for same day release? UA would have to make that appointment? I might tap into you when we can finally go to get private vet info. I do know that if we don't get same day release for some reason we will be turning around and going home.
I'll be brief but PRIOR to departing to the Islands you will need to schedule an appointment with you local vet who hopefully knows how to fill out the travel documents. The Hawaii Dept of Ag site is pretty good and will break down just exactly is needed. CURRENTLY IF YOU FLY DIRECTLY INTO HNL the arrival/clearing Vet in Hawaii is provided by the Dept of Ag at no charge. The animal quarantine office is on airport property. IF you fly directly into let's say KOA you will need to contract with a local vet (references provided on the Dept of Ag website) to schedule a clearance for the direct release program, that is at your expense and can run as high as $400+. Of course prior to leaving (greater than 30 days) you will need to contact the Dept of Ag and apply for the direct release program and submit the requited documents and fee (currently $98). It is a bit confusing but give your self some extra time for your first direct release clearance and you should be fine. My dog travels with me here regularly, especially now since I will be staying here for over a month given the quarantine restrictions. I have come here in the past without her when I was just running over briefly for business but that is now all in the past sadly.

Thanks. My vet's office is actually quite familiar with all those pet travel forms and said Hawaii is the worst I know I have to go back before departure for flea/tick treatment and more forms I already sent Ag $185 and all the paperwork for the same day release program - I did it mid Feb and then everything shut down. I'm out about $500 for the tests and forms. The titer tests which were done in November were sent in by the lab and he's on their "cleared" list.

They were closed on my island; I know because my good friend is a vet.

The exception list in the original shutdown proclamation included "professional services, such as legal services, accounting services, insurance services, real estate services (including appraisal and title services)." Given the breadth of the exception list, I'd read that as including veterinary services, but your friend may have been more conservative.

Vet services have been available on the Big Island. I actually had to schedule an appoint for my dog. Seems rather cruel to restrict care to a sick animal. But I guess it is up to the individual vet as to whether he/she plans to open during these times.

I got a bunch of calls today from Big Island resorts extending their closures.

The Four Seasons Hualalai will remain closed until December 1. I asked them if they were entertaining the resort bubble concept and they said no; they don't want the liability for babysitting guests during a 14 day quarantine period. On the bright side, they are offering good kama'ainna discounts 12/1-12/18...if they do open in December.

A manager at Mauna Lani said they will likely stay closed until 12/1 too although said that was unofficial for now.

Hilton called to say HWV will not reopen until later in the fall but were less committed to a date. They canceled reservations until 10/1 but told me 11/1 may be more realistic...but added they currently have no intention of opening with the 14 day quarantine up.

HGVC said their plans to open HGVC Ocean Tower and King Land in September are scrubbed. They opened up Kohala Suites and Bay Club to cater to interisland guests but with the interisland quarantine back, it sounds like they may re-close those. I asked for a date when things would be open; they said while they'll take reservations for the fall, they are considering things to be closed indefinitely. HGVC corporate called me separately to offer one of their staycation offers (those 4 night stays with rental car for $500) but when I asked about these Hawaii properties, they said they're not booking them in 2020 at all.

I had a golf package at Mauna Kea that expires in September and the GM told me theyll honor it at sometime in the future when things get back to normal. Which doesn't seem like anytime soon.

With the Four Seasons taking the lead to close until December, I think the other Kohala properties will follow.

And with widespread community spread now becoming a problem on the Big Island, I think the rest of 2020 is at risk too. Three weeks ago you'd hear about the 1 case that popped up on the island. In the last 24 hours, it was tough to keep up with the list of schools, stores, and restaurants now shuttered due to someone testing positive. Whether it was the school in Volcano, the Queens Shop Marketplace in Waikoloa, or Leung's in Hilo, it seems like things are spreading beyong the initial hotspots in Kona.

Thanks WB, I guess, although no reason to shoot the messenger. This is the final nail in the coffin of a November trip to Maui and the Big Island that I had arrogant certitude would be a go when reserved in May. I congratulated myself on picking a November 2nd start instead of October 30th. In fairness, just looking at the website pictures from the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel got me through some dark days as I awaited my 5-night SNA to kick in: I’ll now have to search for other travel porn. Grrrrrr!

Hapuna Beach, around the corner from the Mauna Kea, has been pretty busy in July and early August but was surprisingly quiet last week. So I'm not sure if the earlier crowds were interislanders or if people are avoiding going out due to the rise in cases.

Thursday was the emptiest summertime day I've ever seen, short of when all beaches were closed earlier in the pandemic. Maybe a dozen cars in the parking lot at most?

Hapuna on Thursday

Just wanted to add that Four Season Hualalai used this as an opportunity to close for maintenance. Timing was definitely not so kind for Mauna Lani Auberge who just opened and then had to close after 18 months redoing the entire property. CanoeHouse is back open as is Merrimans.

Wise move. Lt Gov. Josh Green is pushing for a 4 week lockdown based on the news this morning. Sorry no link, I actually watch the news on the tv. KGMB is what I’m watching this morning. Also sounds like an announcement will be made today by Mayor Victorino of new restrictions for Maui later today. Likely closing the beaches and parks again.
