//TOPIC CHECK - STAY ON TOPIC//

Aloha - as a reminder to all, FT's rules specifically state: "FlyerTalk exists for the discussion of frequent flyer programs and the related travel experience. With the exception of the few areas specifically designated for the discussion of other topics, confine your comments as closely as possible to these topic areas and to the topic of the thread and forum in which you are posting." FlyinHawaiian and I recognize that it is easy to intertwine political commentary with the policies advanced by politicians that affect travel to Hawaii. However, we ask that you keep in mind the nature of this Hawaii forum and focus your attention on the policies and their impact on travel to/from/within Hawaii. Commentary about Hawaii's politicians are off-topic, belong in the OMNI forum, and will be deleted if posted on this thread. We ask for your kokua and cooperation. If you have any questions, please let us know.

That's a shame, I have lined up the trip for our anniversary in Sept.
I canceled our own September plans yesterday as I had that " its not going to be happening " feeling

Nearly six months ago we were told the whole purpose of this was to "flatten the curve." Well, here we are and apparently whatever they are doing isn't working. I'm not saying I have the answers but just leaving the entire state shutdown from it's revenue stream indefinitely is sure a questionable way to proceed. How long does this go on? What if a vaccine doesn't happen? Is Hawaii just closed forever?
The powers that be have no end game in sight. So they just continue to throw mandates on the people hoping something will stick. And so far we'd have been better off protecting the very old/care facility people and leaving the rest of society be. Masks? Yeah, states have had those mandates for months and we're no better off at all. And don't say no one is wearing them....probably 80% or better everywhere are give or take S.D. who forewent the madness. Hope HI opens soon!

I had dinner at Mauna Lani last night. So sad seeing the resort deserted.

We were there this past Sunday for a benefit for Kahilu Theatre - Mauna Lani has become a partner with Kahilu during this time so that live performances can move forward - 40 lawn seating and 50 restaurant so there was no crowd and quite a bit of social distancing

I was supposed to go in May, and had just submitted the paperwork to get my dog on the islands - which was NOT an inexpensive proposition. Then the virus hit and we postponed to November, hoping we could go. It looks like we'll be cancelling yet again. While I certainly wouldn't mind being stuck in our reserved suite, I think it means we can't leave it, not even to go for a walk.

Correct. You would have to quarantine inside the suite the entire 14 days. At this point I don't expect Hawaii to drop that restriction before 2021.

I watched a part of that online. It sounds like that was the last event on the books for Canoe House.

They said as long as they get 50-60 guests for dinner, they can keep the restaurant open. But due to union rules, the hotel couldn't reopen without mainland tourists coming in. While there's some kama'ainna that would visit, it wouldn't be enough to warrant the minimum staffing levels that the union requires.

I suppose it's more economical for the resorts to stay shuttered than to even open up a tower or floor or two to accommodate locals with cash to spend.

The carrying costs of keeping the Four Seasons at Hualalai, the Hilton Waikoloa Village, and the HGVC Kings Land there but closed have to be incredible. Just the electric bill (or property tax bill) have to be outrageous.

That is nuts. What could possibly be the explanation for that sort of incompetence?

Hey, per your original comment I am now hearing they are enforcing the beach closures state wide so you may not be wrong about that after all. Still in quarantine in Kona so direct information is limited but that is what my surfer nephew is saying fwiw. He said he was told to take his board (at Banyans), enter the water, then when done sufering leave by local police. No lingering on the beach. He is life long local here. Any more recent updates on this?

You wouldn't even be able to step out of your room during those 14 days unless you encountered a medical emergency. They'd issue you a single use room key or escort you to the room and open it for you. If you wanted food, you'd have to mask up in your room and have it delivered there. No leaving the room, not even to use resort facilities like on-site pool or eatery.

Same issues here, they will credit you the dog fees at the Dept of Ag and NO Vet fees if you go through Honolulu (HNL) which is a plus if you are going there. I recently cleared my dog through HNL and I got lucky and the lines were not long but other have reported long lines outside the quarantine station which can be very hot with little to no shade.
We cancelled several times as some on this board will tell you until I final just had to go for work/financial reasons. I am half way through quarantine and I can tell you traveling here wasn't easy. They quarantine is a hassle but at least I have a yard I can sit in and walk my dog. I plan to leave the middle of next month and return in late Nov/Dec, HOPEFULLY there will be no quarantine at that time as I would absolutely hate repeating this. Good Luck!

They were planning 2 benefits/month but when the inter-island quarantine was reinstated, everything was put on hold. The initial opening was Brother Nolan followed by Mark Yamanaka and then Blayne Asing. A large percentage of the musicians that perform at Kahilu live on Oahu and Maui. The season is completely shot for the theatre and they are doing their best to remain afloat. My personal favorite was the Annual Slack Key Guitar and Ukulele Festival that is held in November - not this year.

Along the same lines, Merriman's Waimea just opened to modified outdoor dining this week. Merrimans at least has a local clientele which may help. I am not sure CanoeHouse can sustain as it is a special occasion restaurant and relies on hotel guests but I am going to remain optimistic.

So the union would rather have everyone unemployed than just some?

It appears so, but that's management's take. I'm sure they need a magic number just to hit break even on their margins, so I'm so labor costs is just part of that.
