Munich trip

I have three full days to spend in Munich in February. I will plan on staying in the city center somewhere I just haven’t looked at bonvoy properties yet. I’m looking to be close to restaurants, bars, and good kebab shops.

Any recommendations? Looking for walking tours, museums.

brewery tours?

also does Uber or Lyft serve MUC?

Not sure about Lyft, but Uber works in Munich. The S1 or S8 will get you from the airport to Munich Hbf fairly quickly and cheaply.

For museums I'd recommend the Deutsches Museum
https://www.deutsches-museum.de/

and for some good food/bier
https://wirtshaus-im-braunauer-hof.de/
about an 8 minute walk from Marienplatz

When I lived in the area in the late 1970s my bicycle route to work included the length of the English Garden. It was a nice way to start and end the day, though I was initially a bit startled by the local habit of sunbathing and swimming naked. At one point some people tried to get it suppressed but the chief police office said that they would look ridiculous arresting naked people and declined to act. I also remember the Nymphenburg Palace grounds as a nice place to walk, I used to spend time in the tropical house to thaw out in winter.

Just curious I looked at the average February high of 40 in MUC. I went to FRA 10 years ago also in February and it was very cold as in the 20's F during the day. Anyway for kicks and giggles I googled FRA's avg Feb high and it was 44F. Being 240 miles south of FRA I thought MUC would be a little warmer. Is there elevation at play here?

I could see it being colder as Munich is about 1400' higher in elevation and only about 45ish miles from the Alps.

Public transport is very good, you shouldn’t need Uber or Lyft. I enjoyed the English Garden, Deutsch Museum, Alte Pinotek and BMW museum. There are several kebab places close to the train station. Also very cheap and easy to take day trips by rail.

Thanks for the tip. I'm somewhat intimidated by public trans I don't know well. Is it the U or S bahn that serves MUC? Is it a separate train line? As a BMW owner I would love to see that museum but it looks like a hike. The Deutsch Museum looks awesome!

Public transport is unified so bus, tram, u-bahn, and s-bahn have a common ticketing system. It works by zones and is well explained in several languages, at least in train stations. You can buy a single trip ticket or a card with strips each good for one zone. Or you can buy a day ticket. You must put a date/time/location stamp on it at the station or on the bus/tram to validate it. It is well explained at: https://www.muenchen.de/int/en/traff...transport.html

When I went to Munich around 2006 I was able to do a BMW factory tour. It was one of the highlights of that particular trip to Europe. I don't know if the tours are still available but it worth trying to find out.

Here's a link to the museum and factory tour https://www.bmw-welt.com/en/experien...ded_tours.html

Careful with Uber in Europe, especially on short trips it's often more expensive than a taxi (which you can call if necessary with the officially app FreeNow). Yesterday in Paris Uber wanted 20 for a ride (cheapest option), Taxi was 12. Same in London. While Uber was significant cheaper than taxis in 2019, now it's mostly more expensive.

The Ubahn is for local trains, inside the city. It’s the subway, metro, underground. The Sbahn serves the suburbs surrounding the city. You can use either, same ticket. The Sbahn serves Munich airport, which is also served by regional trains and intercity trains.

I’d add the Residenz and Asam Church to what the others have listed … and agree with their suggestions.

I’ve stayed at the Courtyard by the train station which is certainly central to everything but not in the best area. Also Le Meridian right across from the train station.

The public transportation system is easy to navigate, efficient (it’s Germany) and safe. I wouldn’t hesitate to use it.

Not the greatest area, but definately could be worse. German public transportation I, for the most part, find to be excellent. The wife and I spend October most years in Berlin and with the Db monthly card I really enjoy just taking the S/U/Tram all around the city just picking up new areas.

We (myself, wife, in-laws) spent one night at the Eden Hotel Wolff next to the station that was quite nice. Well, I actually stayed at the ER for most of the stay after developing a blocked intestine AND food poisoning (poisoning was when in Berchtesgaden). Trip back to Berlin via Db, flight to IST and ATL were a treat as was the 3 day stay in the hospital back in GA.
