I’d add the Residenz and Asam Church to what the others have listed … and agree with their suggestions.

I’ve stayed at the Courtyard by the train station which is certainly central to everything but not in the best area. Also Le Meridian right across from the train station.

The public transportation system is easy to navigate, efficient (it’s Germany) and safe. I wouldn’t hesitate to use it.
