~14 Hours to Kill in FRA

Arriving in FRA in morning, connecting to SIN 14 hours later...have experienced FCT (almost 4 years ago) before but have no experience with the FCLs nor Kempinski.

"Über-maximization" of F experience comes to mind, but on the fence about spending all 14 hours in either lounge or FCT... and as I recall the FCT day rooms were hard to come by if not sparse.

Is it easier to get the FCL day rooms, should I trek to FCT, or am I better off just going the Kempinski route (which I understand can do even with an O ticket)?

Sampling all grades of scotch comes to mind but I don't think my body could handle it - and I doubt my fellow travellers would enjoy excessive snoring in the lounge.

What about some sightseeing in Frankfurt? You can go by yourself, but also hop on those red tourist busses...

A lounge for 14 hours? even a hotel room? Sounds pretty boring. Just go downtown, see the city, do fun stuff, eat and then there is still plenty of time for the lounge and some real sleep on the plane.

Good ideas of course, but I've pretty much exhausted the city in previous visits (and I might find myself drinking too much Apfelwein). Also attempting to avoid certain relatives. Perhaps Mainz this trip...

On the way back I will spend some time in München. ^

Don't waste a day of your life at an airport! Get out. If you've done Frankfurt too often, pick some other places in the area. There are plenty to choose from and you can get there easily by train.

BTW: In Frankfurt, I liked the Telecommunications Museum.

If you want to invest in a rental car, you could even go to Luxembourg.

or if you want to invest in another flight, get a ticket to the near country/city you always wanted to visit within an hour flight, grab a taxi and do some sightseeing... now, THAT, would be a story to tell!

I agree that sounds pretty boring.
Just go downtown, see the city..
Ok that sounds even more boring. Hence I recommend over-utilization of the FCT and the offered free wireless access.

Yes!

But an E fare to ZRH and test the First Class lounge access rule "same day boarding pass in F on LH" there. Then post the images here.

You are right. Although I hate Frankfurt (both as city and airport), I would still try to get downtown before I hang out at any lounge there for 14 hours...

If you don´t like Frankfurt, take the S-train to Mainz or Wiesbaden! If the weather is good you could also take the train along the Rhine River to Ruedesheim, try some wine there and enjoy a boat trip on the Rhine back to Mainz.

I would hire a cheap car (SIXT has sometimes some convertible as a special).
Then explore the Surrounding.
- Rhine Valley, Loreley,
- Taunus - Feldberg
- Wiesbaden,...

Or: With 14 hours you can easily fit in a short detour to Berlin with some cheap flights

You could also just take the ICE Train to cologne, it's just an hour from FRA and if booked in advanced quite affordable.

I recently booked flight from FRA to AMS for 88 Euro, don't know if you have been in AMS but this could also be an option.

Or have a real adventure ..... Take the Bus to Hahn get on a FR flight to STN and back

With 14 hours, I'd rent a car and head to Rothenburg ob der Tauber:

Lovely old medieval walled city - I really like it.

It's about a two hour drive from FRA, though I would plan 2.5 hours to be safe. The A3 often has a lot of traffic.

I'd drive to downtown Frankfurt by Regionalbahn train, stroll the "Museumsufer" Main riverside with all the museums and exhibitions and maybe end up at the old Markthalle for some snacks. You could still return early to the airport for some lounge break.

The Rhine river to the west is quite nice as well. On a nice day a little boatride might be an option too. If you feel like hiking you could walk up the Feldberg mountain and back as well (more for the sport-minded). Oberursel is within reach of the Metro-Stadtbahn.

You are all funny guys here....

FCT or FCL for more than 90 minutes seems to be very boring for me.
No idea if you would get a day room in the FCL or FCT, but even if so, this is not great for other travellers if you occupy one of the rooms for the full day... And furthermore there is no window in it, so why would you do that... You dont want to be in a prison when you are travelling F?

Sometimes I think O class travellers have strange ideas about maximising.....

I would do it very differently:
Make a reservation for the Kempinski, it will be free of charge.
Once you have deboarded, go to the place where the shuttle leaves and call the hotel. They will arrange a pickup for you, also free of charge.
Spend the day in the Kempinski. Have a nice meal there (it is a bit costly, but really great quality in "Forsthaus" or eat something in the "Wintergarten").
Go to the pool area, they have an outdoor pool and an indoor pool.
The outdoor pool is great, even if it is snowing outside, because it is heated.

It is one of the greatest places around, and you will enjoy it free if charge.

You can also go for a walk in the forest, and the rooms are very nice.

I dont like the staff in the hotel, so I would not go there if it is not free of charge. But in this case - it is just great!!

You will be able to stay at least 8 hours in the hotel, maybe even 10. So you can swim, make some sports if you want, watch a nice movie, sleep a bit and have fresh air.
This is really maximising, because it maximises your quality of life. Lounge maximising is bad for everyone, even for you. Kempinski is a great thing on the other hand. I would go there even if I only had 5 or 6 hours of layover. Just because it is within the forest, fresh air and great surroundings.

Dont forget to make a reservation for the shuttle back to the airport asap when you arrive, because they are fully booked sometimes.

Enjoy!

I've got to agree that any lounge for more than 2 hours or so can be pretty boring. Go out, see the city, and have a little apfelwein.
