EU flight change- compensation/refund rules

HI there!

I made a booking for an FB flight from SOF to LHR for June.

My SOF-LHR flight was supposed to depart at 06:00 and now has been moved to 06:25. This is not a problem.

However, my LHR-SOF return flight has been moved from 22:35 to 17:05, which is a major change as well as an inconvinice.

I was not made aware of either change and found out by accident (browsing the airlines website)

What are the EU regulations for this? Are there compensation rules or refund rules?

I have e-mailed the airline and simply asked for an upgrade.

Since the changes were made so long in advance, the only thing you're entitled to is a free refund.

Good luck with that upgrade.

Yes, there are rules, as established by EU 261/2004:
http://ec.europa.eu/transport/passengers/air/air_en.htm

However, since this isn't until June, you aren't entitled to compensation. You could get a refund and cancel, though.

Your best bet is to try to look at flight schedules to see if there is another option that you could suggest for rebooking that would better meet your needs.

Slightly OT, but what would have happened if the OP had not contacted the airline and the airline had not contacted the OP before the flight, and the OP just showed up two hours before the (original) 22:35 flight that already left at 17:05?

Would the OP than have been entitled to compensation?

Probably, unless they were able to rebook on a flight scheduled to "depart no more than one hour earlier than scheduled and arrive no more than two hours later than scheduled".

Many airlines, though, have a tendency to wait until the last minute to make calls notifying pax of changes (right before that 14 day window)--so it's highly likely the OP would have received a call in May/June.
