Yes, there are rules, as established by EU 261/2004:

However, since this isn't until June, you aren't entitled to compensation. You could get a refund and cancel, though.

Your best bet is to try to look at flight schedules to see if there is another option that you could suggest for rebooking that would better meet your needs.
Slightly OT, but what would have happened if the OP had not contacted the airline and the airline had not contacted the OP before the flight, and the OP just showed up two hours before the (original) 22:35 flight that already left at 17:05?

Would the OP than have been entitled to compensation?
