Due to some scheduling snafus, it appears that I will be landing in MUC at 8AM and not departing until 3PM. That effectively gives me 7 hours to bum around. Rather than stay at the airport, I'd like to head into town. A few questions:
1) How easy are airport-to-downtown transfers via public transportation? How much would it cost? What stop do we disembark at?
2) Is there a "left luggage" area? Can we leave our carry-ons in one of the SEN lounges?
3) What to see? Is it pretty easy to move around the town? Where to eat?

You can go with the S-Bahn to Munich city. I know that it goes to Hauptbahnhof (Central station), may be there is a better stop..?!
From there you can walk to Marienplatz, Maximillian Strasse, Viktualien Markt.
I like restaurant Nuernberger Bratwurst Gloeckle, next to Marienkirche (cathedral).

You can use either S-Bahn Line 1 or Line 8 (Line 8 stops at Marienplatz before the Hauptbahnhof, unlike Line 1). 38 minutes for Line 8, 44 mi
Right at Marienplatz itself is the old CIty Hall with the animated clock characters and other attractions.
I second the recommendation for checking out the Viktualmarkt, just a couple of blocks from the Marienplatz station. Enclosed and open-air food stalls and places to eat and drink

Don't know if your schedule will allow it, but Mike's Bike Tours depart from the town square. I took one on a Sunday morning- 4 hours, in English, conducted by a guide who knew the history and threw in a lot of funny stories. They're very tame physically- you cover only 4 miles and it ends in a beer garden.

Another option, if you are not set on going into Munich itself, is to visit the little town of Freising (www.freising.de) nearby. It is about 8km northwest of the airport on the far side of the A92 and has a quaint downtown area with a very good italian restaurant, Pasta & More (http://www.essen-macht-spass.de/kontakt.php) about 1km north of the train station near the intersection of Johannisstrasse and Weihenstephanerstrasse.
The business / shopping area is a little more than a km in length and is charming in that small town german way. Being so close to the airport, it will also not be very expensive for taxis.
