Hello EK wine experts. I've enjoyed perusing this thread ahead of a couple of Emirates flights I have coming up, one in business class, the other in first. If possible it'd be good to get some recommendations on what I should try. I enjoy wine but don't really have the capacity to drink my way through the menu, so I'm looking to make the most of the experience of each flight and focus on what's particularly special (particularly if there are any real stand-outs) and what I should avoid (though I'm sure none of them are bad). For reference I'm not a big fan of Chardonnay (particularly the big and buttery or heavily oaked), so I'll likely avoid the Aussie Chardonnay. Like most Kiwis I'm partial to a good Sauv Blanc, but I grew up on Craggy Range so I'm likely to avoid that too. Reds I'm happy drinking anything, from a soft and delicate Pinot Noir through to a bold Shiraz/Syrah or Cab Sauv. Not a fan of overly sweet or fortified etc so I've left off the dessert wines and port. I'll have maybe one glass of Dom on the first class flight but don't like drinking too much fizz on flights.

In F, they should be happy to set up a wine flight for you!

But as you see some of the F wines are actually just the J wines as well.

I had it last night on my SFO to DBX flight. I’m not the biggest or most knowledgeable about wines, but the bottle I had was great. My favorite out of of the two other I had: Smith Lafite or the Latour Burgundy. Not much acid, subdued, touch of oak, and Abit more fruit forward.

It’s alright. Nothing special and relatively weak as far as Opus One vintages go.

However I have seen one thing that I am very excited about and that is the addition of Château Smith Haut Lafitte blanc 2013 to the wine lists to Europe and America's routes which is amazing!


What is this about? anyone have any knowledge why they changed? i was so looking forward to having a bottle of it in feb :(

Oxidized Undrinkble Wines

Emirates has a major problem with their white wines. 2 superb wines Boillot 2014 ( great vintage wines still vibrant) Meursault and 2012 Batard Montrachet Louis Latour ( easy 500$ bottle) were both dark brown and totally oxidized. This is not the first time I have had this issue but this is the worst I have seen. Staff puzzled and apologetic of course.

A similar bottle of Meursault in the FC lounge was barely drinkable but a vast improvement on the wine served on board..

Emirates are aging their whites too long for the trauma they must go through in the supply chain. Only drinkable white was a Greuner also served in J Class. What a waste of money for everyone.

I agree - I found at least 4 whites offered in F durring flights in June/July to be well over the hill - Bordeaux as well as Burgundy.

Definitely a widespread issue at the moment on EK. I don't think ageing is the issue per se, but rather storage and supply chain - as you say. Those are all whites that can age superbly. I reported this four months ago (you can read my post from June 7, nr 694 in this thread, here). Unfortunately the situation has not improved and is not limited to specific bottles, but affects a very diverse range of whites served onboard. I still wonder if the issue is a big storage facility that experienced a major fault in climate control... It's a shame to see a sizeable portion of such good wines gone so bad.

Quality was good on my two recent F flights - YYZ-DXB had a nice Chevalier-Montrachet that I was drinking and then a Meursault 1er Cru from DXB-JNB.

Nothing exciting in the A Flounge

EDIT: I’m actually posting from the JNB flight and I did find an off bottle - Bichot Gevry-Chambertin at the bar was not right
