I like to board early independent of the class of travel. Gives me the sense of getting out if that miserable airport (they all are) and be on my merry way.
The disadvantage is that in Y having an aisle seat one typically gets hit by a thousand oversized backbags people like to carry in their backs when spinning their way through the aisles.

Flying Y always board as early as possible. Priority Boarding is the key here, this is very important on India routes where people carry three donkeys and a TV with them in cabin luggage. I don't check in bags generally so have a roller hardcase (small, within size limits), but need to get on early to snag a spot. On routes where I know the plane is empty I don't rush and prefer to wait in the lounge. For J it's 50:50, if I'm bored in the lounge I board, but if I've not had much time I rather spend a little more snacking in the lounge.

I always wonder how they get away this this? Obviously the 3 donkeys is a stretch of the imagination but point taken. I stress about whether my carry on bags are 1cm longer than the rules and I'm pretty damn sure that if I did go over I would be pulled up. So how come some people stagger on board with what seem like huge portmanteau cand then have the cheek to ask for help getting them in the overhead locker)

It's routine on these flights to see a football field of bags scattered at the entrance of the jetway being gate-checked. Notably on the routes into India there are also the assortment of duty free bags and goodies which of course EK always permits ON TOP of cabin bags.

2 - they checked in at a rather lax station
My advice for stress free travel is to take it as fact it's anarchy out there and go with the flow
No point in getting irritated at what should have happened, or what's happened to other people - it's too late for that!
