Flying Y always board as early as possible. Priority Boarding is the key here, this is very important on India routes where people carry three donkeys and a TV with them in cabin luggage. I don't check in bags generally so have a roller hardcase (small, within size limits), but need to get on early to snag a spot. On routes where I know the plane is empty I don't rush and prefer to wait in the lounge. For J it's 50:50, if I'm bored in the lounge I board, but if I've not had much time I rather spend a little more snacking in the lounge.
