In transit for about 8 hours.
Greetings!
Next month I'll be arriving in DXB, not long after midnight en - route to BNE, and will be departing at 10:25.
I'll have use of the F lounge , so shall grab a bit of a snooze. I'm toying with the idea of going airside for a wander afterwards. (I do believe that I can get a free visa.)
Any suggestions as to how I can while away the hours?
Thanks in advance,
Cypress.

If you are feeling particularly energetic, you might be able to get out in time for 0100 to go to the various bars and clubs that are open at that time. I'd probably just settle for a decent hotel and come back for breakfast at the lounge in the morning...

This is a tough one. Arriving at midnight and leaving at 10:00 am or thereabouts makes a long stay in the F lounge (it is a nice experience, but it doesn't offer private cabanas like BA does at Heathrow and other airlines). The best you can do at DXB is the 'quiet room', which is a rather large, fairly dark and quiet, with lounges and lay-flat davenports (is that what they are called?). It isn't all that private, frankly.
A second option is going into town in the middle of the night to experience Dubai. I have to say that going into town at 1:00 or 2:00 am and returning at 7:00 or 8:00 isn't the best plan.
The third option is checking into a hotel for a short stay. I transited DXB last month in F with an 16 hour layover - in that case, a hotel made sense. I would truly question whether anything shorter than that does.
I've done 8-10 hour transits in the F lounge 3-4 times. While they aren't necessarily the best in terms of seeing stuff, that is about all one can reasonably do in that time frame.
Bottom line - I'd recommend staying in the F lounge for your transfer.

I recommend booking a room in the airport hotel. You could duck into the lounge any time, plus get decent sleep. Spending longer than 3 hours in any lounge is not particularly enticing, and chances of catching a snooze is more akin to laying on a waiting chair than an actual bed. It is guaranteed to take away all the positives from a first class experience.
Not worth leaving the airport either around that time of the night.

For a full overnight transit of that length, you definitely need a proper bed in a hotel. It's money well spent, and you'll be glad you did. Otherwise you will be starting that long flight down to BNE the next morning feeling pretty jaded, which will only detract from the onboard experience, as per edy4eva's post.
In all honesty, anything more than 3 or 4 hours in a lounge - even the F one - is too long unless absolutely unavoidable. The thought of staying there from around midnight to almost 10am next day, with no real privacy, is depressing.

I had no issues spending (deliberately) 12 hours in transit in the F class lounge in Dubai in Concourse A. It is an extraordinary experience and you should enjoy every moment of it. You can enjoy complimentary sleeping sofas, showers, food, business center, and a 15 minutes massage session ^
What more can you ask for? Why would you pay for a hotel room when you can sleep and eat for free? I don't understand you people

Subject2 - I'd completely forgotten about the onsite airport hotel. Having said that, it sounds as though the poster wants to minimize costs. I've always been 'accommodated' at the Meridien during transfers, but it does take an hour or so from touch-down to the hotel (don't forget to pack a change of clothes in the carry-on) and then another couple of hours to get back to the terminal, check in, have something to eat (forget the hotel buffet!), and then board. I agree that 8 or so hours wandering around DXB - even the F lounge - is painful and not to be recommended. If I were wanting to economize, I would do the Holiday Inn or the other one adjacent to it, just off the airport grounds. Would probably cost just $150 or so and it is close.

During day time, you can possibly work, but, during sleep hours ... an airport remains an airport (a short transit place).
The quiet room is OK if you can sleep on a curved chair. It'll just remind how we travelled in the 80s/90s ...

A few weeks ago, I've seen a woman sleeping on the sofa. This is honestly not what is expected in the F lounge.
And please ... avoid T-shirt, short pants and bare feet (in shoes). We are not at C lounge

8 hours is going to be very very long.

The C lounge is sooo bad when compared to A&B, hope they will refurbish it soon!

Hey and happy 2016! Emirates will only give you a free (visa/hotel/transportation/food&drink) if you qualify for Dubai connect service ( STPC) , Your stopover has to be over 6hrs and under 24hrs for F/J and must not be a Award Ticket or Promo fare ticker and you must be connecting on to the next available flight so if the next connecting flight is under the 6hr time frame you don't qualify ......
GOOD TIP - If you have Face book message them , ask if you qualify and they will get back to usually in under 15mins, better then email or call centre sometime
