Missing bag and name on bag receipt
Arrived in Dubai this morning as part of a group of 5 only for my luggage to be missing. Have filled in the appropriate forms, however what I found odd in the process was ALL the bag stickers/receipts have GRP and then the name of one of the persons in our party which presumably was done at random. As this persons name was on the stickers, that was the person who HAD to fill in the missing luggage form, and is the name I have to enter when I check the web page to see if my bag has been found. My concern is that that is not the name on the two luggage tags attached to the bag, so if something has happened to the barcode stickers on the bag, how will they match the bag? Surely it would make more sense for the name on the missing luggage form to match the name on the bag?

The name on the bag is the name you checked the bag under. You checked it under somebody else's name, so that's how it is checked.
It's water under the bridge for you, but in the future, it is critical that you double-check bag tags to make certain that they match your name and flight information. Luckily your was checked under the name of somebody in your party and to the proper destination.
To answer your specific question, it makes much more sense for the bag to be entered in WorldTracer as checked. It is far more likely that the bag tag is on the bag and that is how it will be located than that the tag has been ripped off and that it will have to be identified by other means.

What do you mean by name we checked in under. The group was me (dad), mum who still uses her maiden name, and 3 kids who have my surname. I would have been first in queue as we were travelling on Qantas Emirates code share and were using priority checkin lane and I am only one with Gold status in the group. The only way I can think that the check in agent used mums name was that hers was the last passport handed over.
24h and no trace, second time in three trips this particular bag has gone missing.

I think your bag is cursed if this bag keeps going missing though

It doesn't matter - Worldtracer has a bag description, and the ground agents encounter this situation often (name on tag not the same as name on bag itself). You must be sure to give an accurate description of the bag though!

Standard practice that they tag all bags in one travelling group under one of the pax - saves time and in the vast majority of cases, no problems result

Now, concerning the delayed baggage ... hum ... Be brave.
I can tell you two of my experiences :
1/ Delayed baggage at out-station due to short connection. My assistant had to harass EK (no exaggeration) just to be informed. The day after, my baggage landed (obviously, it didn't take the next flight ...), but EK couldn't say when it would be delivered ... So, I had it delivered at the hotel ... At the end, EK gave me 50 EUR ! ! ! (it would have been lower if flying Y). Not enough to buy a new set of clothes and underwear ...
2/ Mistaken baggage at out-station. My baggage was taken by someone else. It became quite obvious when the only left baggage was exactly the same as mine. I filed a lost baggage file, informing them of the coincidence. Again, calls to EK. No information, no cooperation, absolutely no will to solve the issue. As I had taken a photo of the left-baggage tag, I entered into his reservation, checked his tel number and called him. He had indeed taken my baggage and (to make it short) kindly returned it to me in person.
Sorry OP. Take your matters into your own hands. Harass EK. Make noise.

Just to top of it off. On the leg home, again one of our bags did not make the connection in Australia, and arrived the next morning. So the last 3 transits through Australia, my or one of my groups bags has not made it, and it is not as if they have been short transfers either.
Now I'm home, just have to figure out how to get some compensation for the 48 hour delay of bag into Dubai that started this. Doesn't look like it will be easy.

... having "fun" trying to recover expenses for the bag delay. Just when I thought I'd found the right contact and filled in the right forms, the amount was 20% less when converted to NZD than what I had incurred. When querying exchange rate used, was told "I wish to clarify that the sum of NZD ***.** is based in accordance with our book keeping rate and we do not use exchange rates in the financial market.
