Heathrow is finished.
Because of the sheer moronic attitudes that pervade the country, there will be a lot of umming and ahhing while everyone dithers over where to relocate the sole ancient grasshopper that lives in a shed at the end of the northern runway.
And by the time they finally come to their senses and torch the beast, Heathrow will be relegated to the status of a smoked out backwater, and instead Paris, Amsterdam and Dubai will soar above the ashes of that airfield west of London to overtake its place.
Absolutely incredible stupidity in the UK nowadays.

Alec has finally put up two renders of concourse 4 on they're web site so we can get a better ideal of what we can expect.

Not sure what I was expecting design wise, but it's not particularly good looking in these renders from Alec's website. And is it just me or do I see an overground EPM coming to C4 from C1?
Source: http://www.alec.ae/projects/dubai-in...t-concourse-4/
Given the small size of C4, with just 16 contact gates, I reckon this will be the final push needed to get airlines to start using DWC....

This will be good enough to handle foreign airlines, and let's not forget T2 will have more capacity once FlyDubai takes its operations to DWC.
The style of the building is not that bad, kind of reminds me of Berlins new airport. The oval design won't work here since they're only using one side of the concourse.

Dubai passenger numbers top 18m in 4 months
Dubai: 1 hour and 2 minutes ago
Passenger traffic at Dubai International, the worlds fourth busiest hub for international passengers and freight, crossed the 4.5 million mark for the fourth consecutive month, according to the April traffic report issued by Dubai Airports today.
Passenger traffic in April reached 4,566,673, an increase of 7.8 per cent compared to 4,237,548 during the corresponding month in 2011.
The strong performance during the first four months of this year has propelled the year to date traffic to 18,828,279, a surge of 13.9 per cent over the 16,525,376 recorded during the same period last year, it said.
The GCC continued to top the list of regions with the largest increase in total passenger numbers (+72,136 passengers), followed by Africa (+59,063) and Western Europe (+49,113). Routes to Russia and CIS also registered robust growth in April (+46,375). Contraction on Middle Eastern routes continued in April (-22,270 passengers) owing to continuing instability in certain parts of the region.
South America has remained the strongest market in terms of percentage passenger growth (+92.7 per cent) as a result of recently introduced Emirates services to Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires, followed by Russia and CIS (+35.5 per cent), and Australasia (+22 per cent).
Dubai International recorded a total of 28,503 aircraft movements in April, up 7.2 per cent compared to 26,597 in April 2011. The year to date movements increased 7.7 per cent to 114,517, compared to 106,302 recorded during the first four months in 2011.
Dubai International handled 186,385 tonnes of cargo in April 2012 compared to 179,397 tonnes in April 2011, up 3.9 per cent and in line with forecasts for moderately improved volumes during 2012. Year to date cargo volumes reached 703,826 tonnes, an increase of 1.8 per cent compared to 688,537 tonnes during the corresponding period in 2011.
Crossing the 4.5 million mark in terms of monthly passenger numbers is becoming the norm at Dubai International and we could break the 5 million passenger ceiling during the summer peak, said Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports.
Ensuring that the millions of passengers that use the facility every month pass through smoothly and efficiently is one of the top priorities for Dubai Airports. To cope with the seasonal rush we will launch the annual Summer Mission programme, which will see the deployment of over 500 May I Help You staff across the airport. That, along with the expansion of our transfer facility in Terminal 3 and the opening of an express check-in facility for flydubai customers in Terminal 2, will help accommodate the record passenger flows.

With the Expo Halls being knocked down in full swing it shouldn't be long before we see this part of the airport clearing out, knocking down, and the digging process starting.
Expect the taxiway on this side of C4 to also be closed down so the digging of the APM tunnels can begin. I figure once C4 opens up they will transfer all the other airlines to use it, and the rest of the tunnel digging will continue on the other side of the taxiway connecting it to C1/T1.

Dubai to overtake Heathrow in 2020
22 May 2012
Dubai International airport is expected to become the third busiest international airport by 2020 as its operator is spending a huge amount of money for expansion on the ground and in the air.
At the moment, Londons Heathrow is ranked third busiest international airport and Dubai is seen to overtake it within a decade. Both airports have allocated billions of dollars for expansion. Heathrow expects a 90 million passenger capacity by 2020, while Dubai International is working to achieve 98 million passengers by 2020.
Dubai International, unfortunately, will probably overtake us as the third busiest international airport at some point of time in this decade, Simon Baugh, director of media relations at BAA Airports, told Khaleej Times.
Baugh said Dubai hopes to handle 100 million passengers by 2020 and Heathrow 90 million passengers. The latter recorded 70 million passengers last year while Dubai International reported 51 million passengers in 2011. There are 90 airlines operating out of Heathrow and servinga total of 180 destinations. On the other hand, Dubai has more than 150 airlines and serves over 200 destinations. In terms of aircraft movements, Heathrow claimed 480,000 a year while Dubai reported 326,317 in 2011. Dubai expects 560,000 movements by 2020.
Heathrow is working on 99.3 per cent of total capacity and there is no more space for any more flights as the UK government does not allow night flights, according to Baugh. He said Dubai has the advantage of night flights, and Heathrow does not allow flights from 11:30pm to 6:00am.
There is room to growth only by putting more passengers on bigger plane as we cannot have more flights. We have 140 passengers per aircraft and we need to have 170-180 passengers to get 90 million passengers target, he said. Dubai International reported 184 average passengers numbers per aircraft movements in 2011. Baugh mentioned that the company is spending around 1 billion a year for improving airport facilities.
In order to accommodate the anticipated growth in 2012 and beyond, Dubai Airports will invest $7.8 billion in airport expansion to boost the current capacity from 60 million passengers per year to 90 million passengers by 2018. The next significant step in those expansion plans will be the completion of Concourse 3, the worlds largest dedicated A380 facility, scheduled by the end of 2012.

It will only be above ground if it connects directly to T1, underground if the connection is to C1.
