Lost baggage
Whilst I fly plenty on EK, I am shocked that they have completely lost my luggage twice this year!
Once on a BHX-DXB and the other day on a BOM-DXB. No transits on either.
It took them 12 weeks the first time to "cough up some compensation “and its been 6 weeks so far from the last lot.
Lesson learnt, no more TUMI bags to check in. No more irreplaceable items in check in (one was a photo album my Mother gave me when i was back in UK). Remove EVERY bar coded label from checked in bags!
Amusing call last week from EK though (they have been very good in communicated so far)...
Agent: Good morning DTB we are just calling to see if you have received your bag yet.
DTB: No i haven't but this is great, have you found it?'
Agent: No we are still looking...
DTB: Then how would I have received it?
Agent: I don’t know, I don’t even know why I asked you that, I am sorry..
DTB: It's OK, I said chuckling loudly - bless them!
Anyone else had bad luck with bags????

EK baggage services are quite horrendous. I've had 4 bags misplaced in the last year and even though all were eventually found, in 2 cases that was due to absolutely no doing of EK.
a) Traveling to Glasgow, bag left behind in Dubai. PIR in Glasgow requested bag to be delivered to my address in London. No sign of it in London the next day. It had been routed from Dubai to Gatwick via Glasgow evidently. BMI at Glasgow arranged for it to be forwarded to EK at Gatwick but EK Gatwick swore it was not received. Fortunately I have a Gatwick airside pass so I went poking around and sure enough the bag was quietly sitting by the British Airways desks with the wrong name and contact details on the Emirates delivery label. The WorldTracer file showed the bag still sitting in Glasgow for 3 months!!!
b) Traveling to Accra, bag left behind in Mumbai. I had been advised during DXB transit that my bag had not been loaded in BOM, so I was not expecting it. However it appears that the agent in Dubai who advised me of the baggage not being loaded also deleted my tag from the system. So Emirates insists that I never checked in any bags even though I had baggage tags showing that I did. Aviance in Accra took a manual AHL but since it was not in WorldTracer it didn't match up with Dubai's OHD file. I spent 25 days trying to get to the bottom of things until I finally got a friend at EK to dig up the OHD details. I plugged those into WorldTracer and found that the bag had been forwarded to EK Accra and had been sitting in the corner of their office for 20 days WITH MY ORIGINAL TAGS (that they claimed didn't exist) and my Skywards Gold tags on. This from the same folks that swore blindly that I had never checked any bags to begin with.
I'm pretty certain that if I didn't have the industry resources that I do and had to rely on EK like everyone else, I'd have been shopping for new luggage.
My complaint from January about the Glasgow bag has still not been responded to - they claim to have been experiencing heavy volumes of mail every time I send a reminder. And not one single call or email from Emirates during either of those incidents (nor the other two which were resolved easily by the bag showing up on the next day's flight).

Thanks B747-437B.
I would guess at the response from the Airlines and the amount of "unclaimed lost baggage" sent for auction each year that that there is a policy of it is cheaper to pay compensation than repatriate lost luggage.
This is bad news for most passengers as many will only receive only a small fraction of the value lost.

Lost one bag completely DXB-AMM.
Was last to check in due to a mix-up, so probably last loaded. Confirmed it was put into container and loaded.
Bag was probably first off in AMM... either someone pilfered it from the baggage hall or less-likely, it went out the back door. No baggage stub check on the way out and plenty of porters piling bags on seemingly at random.
Got compensation that was decent, but had several "sentimental" items inside.

I lost a bag with the between DXB - HKG
When I arrived HKG (no transit) it wasn't there...
I stayed a week in HKG and was calling daily with no luck!
Last day on Airport when I got my boarding pass I thought why not passing to Lost&Found of HKG airport! And guess what! My bag was there!
How come no one bothered to check there, it had all the tags and information, I really don't know whos mistake is it but EK didn't do job the proper way and they weren't looking for it when they were saying they are!

but what if someone wise tried to ask the Lost&Found office and they reported that "Anndalis" has signed and claimed his bag

You may wish to consider contacting Jardine Aviation Services Limited (JASL), the ground handling agent for EK in HKG. Their CS skills are pretty good and should be able to help.

Benefits... the benefit of getting your bag back!
Though you should be able to claim for essential items needed (toiletries, change of clothes) if you were without your bag while visiting somewhere.
If it was delayed on your arrival home, you probably get nothing.

I do not think the airlines cover you for that, that is normally covered with travel insurance.

I was told by the baggage chap at DXB T3 that they would cover these types of items.
This was re-iterated by a Customer Service officer in person at EK WHQ whom I personally spoke with.
The only difference between the two opinions was that the first chap said it would not be deducted from the final payment if the bag is declared a total loss. While the gent at WHQ (which I am more inclined to side with) said that in event of a total loss, that initial payout would be deducted from the final claim.
Apparently the station where you lose your bag, in the end the money comes out of their budget.

What is the typical compensation for a completely lost bag? I've had bags delayed (and typically compensated ~$50/day), but have never had one completely lost!
