The Definitive EK On-Board "Cash Upgrade" Thread.
Having seen similar threads in other forums, thought it would be apt that I start one here for EK. Inquire onboard on prices and post them here along with the route.
To get the ball rolling...
YYZ-DXB Y->J $3000.00 USD (A380)
...politely declined.

Seriously? This was at check in? Or was this one of those emails they've been sending around to people a few days before their flight? I thought all upgrades at check in were ridiculously expensive.

as i checked in, the EK lady asked if i wanted to upgrade as Y was oversold, or that's what she said.

Ok, so instead of giving it for free like they normally would, they charged you for it. I remember asking once for a DXB - SIN flight which wasn't oversold, and it was something like $2700 for a Y -> J upgrade, which was almost as much as a J return.

in dec 09, jfk-dxb (y to j) i was offered USD800 for the upgrade at the check-in counter. declined, but asked whether i could use miles for the upgrade. she countered my decline with a decline.
went to the lounge, hung out a bit, then asked the lady at the lounge counter for the miles-upgrade. got it right there.

January 2010 DXB - BKK, Y - J $400 via email 3 days before departure.
BKK - DXB I was one of the last to board and noticed that J was less than 50% full (they boarded us by the front door) so i asked how much for an upgrade. Purser got back to me when the seat belt sign went off(!) asking $1000, which i declined considering there was only 5 1/2 hours flying time left and i had missed the pre flight benefits!
I would have thought they would have been happy to sell a J seat for less than that price, at that stage, especially with such a light load!?

Feb 6th IAH-DXB Y-J $US3,400.
I passed and changed my FF from Skywards to CO. I had been thinking about moving from QR to EK for my MEAP travel, but after this flight, I can't really see the point.
FWIW
DLM
EDIT to add $US3,400 on-board for the return as well. 21 empty seats in J so they wern't pricing based on filling an empty cabin.
