Inspectors find horsemeat in IKEA meatballs

Ikea stopping sales of its meatballs in Sweden and Italy, report says

Reuters

Sweden's IKEA halted sales of its trademark Swedish meatballs in 13 European countries after tests in the Czech Republic on Monday showed the product contained horsemeat.

IKEA, the world's No. 1 furniture retailer and known also for its signature cafeterias in its huge out-of-town stores, said it had stopped sales of all meatballs from a batch implicated in the Czech tests.

Well there you go, us Swedes like to put a little surprise in our meatballs...
Can't help wondering how long this has been going on. I usually eat the meatballs when my SO drags me there to shop and really like them, the only good part of the hell that is saturday at Ikea.
Then of course, there's nothing wrong with horse meat as such, but it would be nice to know what animal I'm actually eating.

If the meatballs taste so yummy with horse meat in them - add more horse. They are delicious.

I do agree with KurtOlsson as it would be nice to know there was horse in there. And had I known that from the beginning I may not have tried them so many years ago. But the news at this point won't deter me.

Not sure why the idea of eating horse meat is so repugnant, but for me it certainly is.

I love Ikea's food. I hate shopping there though. The furniture is not as much of a bargain as they'd have you believe. Love them horsey meatballs though.

This is part of a major food scandal all over Europe right now, where horse meat is suddenly found in all kinds of ready-made meals and processed foods supposedly consisting of beef and pork. The problem is not really about the horse meat itself, but about the risks of uncontrolled meat. No one knows if these horses from Romania and other places have been checked for diseases and drugs. And of course, when you pay for beef, you expect beef.

I enjoy them a lot too. And when my wife drags me to that awful place (as a Swede, I apologize for bringing IKEA to you) this weekend I can't even have my meatballs... Horse is fine with me, just give me my IKEA meatballs.

BTW, is there an IKEA in Vancouver? Might be going to YVR later this year, first time to Canada, and I hadn't realized the Swedish boxed furniture empire had expanded that far west...

They were a staple for me in Shenzhen (China) when I needed my salad. There are Western restaurants in that metropolis, but IKEA was closest to my abode, and offered up some tasty hazelnut chocolate bars too.

The best meatballs I had in Sweden were at the 7-11 at ARN, though...

There's no problem with eating horse meat.

The problem is this horse meat that is the issue all over Europe was never meant for the food chain. It for example contains high amounts of phenylbutazone, which should not be in food humans are going to eat. Any many other drugs.
