Grocery Store pet peeves

When I lived in the south it only took one trip to Winn-Dixie to make me loyal to Publix. I was walking down the hardware aisle and saw 1.5 pounds of rotting ground beef below the light bulbs, still packaged. That almost made me hurl.
So I guess you could say a pet peeve of mine is when someone takes something off the shelf and then changes their mind. Rather than take it back to where it belongs or hand it to a clerk, they hide it down some random aisle.

Or, the one that I am guilty of. Forgetting to purchase one item on the list as the Cashier is still ringing up your order, and having to leave the line and run to the "other end" of the store to retrieve it, while the other shoppers in line just "glare" at you as you make your way back to the front of the check out line with the "forgotten" item in hand and a "sheepish" grin on your face. Not a pretty picture.

If you need it, check out, have them watch your cart, and go through the line again. Unless it's within 30 feet (or you have a kid who can run quick), then why put the rest of the line through such agony?

Self Check lanes that are poorly designed. They don't have room if you have more than about 10 items. Having something scan and then the machine doesn't react quickly to the weight as it is put in a bag..
An Iowa/Nebraska chain has self-check lanes that are built like the full sized lanes with a casher. You scan and send it down a conveyer, item is checked electronically and then it shoots down to a table where a roaming bagger will usually bag it up.

holier?? where the hell did that come from? and you said people steal. you never said anything about witnessing it happen. this still takes me back to my original point--your problem isn't with parents letting their kids eat, its with theft.

I know it's been mentioned, but people who are lazy and can't walk their carts the 15 feet to the corral. Seem's like there are always a dozen spaces that are unusable due to the cluster of carts taking up the space.

Ok I dont think anyone has mentioned this one.
But it really bothers me when people load their items onto the register and dont make any room for you to put any of your items up, so you literally have to wait until have of their items are scanned until you can put any of your things up.

After going through this thread, I sadly have come up with a few peeves.
1-I used the gag phone number for club cards when I lived in an areas which use them at all stores (DET, DFW and Fresno area). Sadly there are not "super" stores in No Cal, either a Meijer-like store, SuperWalmart and SuperTarget would easily dent the grocery market.
2-Families seem to be shopping later, at the times which either single people used to. On a Friday night and even Tuesday nights (after 10 pm), the stores I go to are full and lines are very long to checkout. I know I am one of those many of you hate as I do just walk out if I deem the line too long.
3-Stores with a toy section. Hearing a Doppler Effect style toy and the subsequent kid running near the butcher is too much, but then again I don't have kids. But I do recall when my parents would beat my a$$ if we misbehaved in public. That has gone away.

I HATE THEM. I want them to stop talking to me. The voice is usually 2 steps behind my actions. They tell me the same thing time and again (please enter quantity)- hundreds of times. I get it. They accuse me of forgetfulness and other character flaws (please check your cart for items you may have forgotten). It asks me if I want Spanish or English - the cashier doesn't. It gets all confused by small produce (1 jalapeno), cloth bags (ok, so does the cashier), alcohol, and gives me cash back in five dollar bills (Wal*Mart).
I'm ready for a new generation of smarter self check-outs.

Reminds me of the supremely stupid question (yes, there is such a thing) back when I would write checks at stores - "Can you give me your work number?" You don't need a work number from an honest customer and a dishonest customer is gonna give you a phony number every time. So, I'd give them 555-1212 or 382-5968 (it spells something naughty).

i also like how the option is there for a large item to be left in the cart, and instead of you being able to scan it and put it back, the guy has to come over and do it.
