Giant Eagle doesn't, at least around here. They refuse to help you out. Also, the Vons or wherever I went to in CA put up a hell of a fight before using it for me.

I'd call the manager and complain. My apartment complex's office does this. On two different occasions, I've gone there shortly before closing to drop off a check, pick up a package, etc...and they were gone.

That's odd, I think I've been able to do that at Giant Eagles around PIT.

Likewise the one on Chagrin (former Topps I think) used to do it for me.

There's a cashier in a local Shoprite who has earned more then a few free trips because she scans her card (or a family members, not sure which) for the Continental miles. She scanned it once when I was shopping with too much stuff for the self service line, I asked her to scan mine instead for the miles and then she said that's why she scans hers whenever she doesn't think the customer has a card.

I smiled and said something like "Like the one I'm holding here right in front of you"

Two of the three chains in this area will find you a card to scan if you need one, though I do most of my shopping with the check out as you go carts or the self service asiles when offered so I don't fuss with the cashiers much anymore.

By the way, a great random tip I learned here on FT -

http://www.justoneclubcard.com/

You can put up to eight of the shoppers cards on a business sized card to stick in your wallet (or 16 if you do two of them, etc) so you always have the discount code even if you don't carry the keys into the store. Works great.

I'm not an expert on this... I'm not a GE shopper except when Heinen's is closed, and I'm not in CLE that much anyways, mostly in school at tOSU. However, the ones in Twinsburg and Solon have been overly difficult with this, making me go look it up, as well as the ones in CMH area.

I actually created a similar card about 5 years ago.... I created it in Word... and put all my frequent travel numbers on one side... and those of my partner on the other side. I then laminated it... and carry it in my wallet vs my cards.

Great saver.... and has come in very handy on the rare occasion where I unexpectly get bumped to an airline or stay in a different hotel than expected.

Shopping at Wegman's on Friday, I experienced many of these pet peeves, and commented to Mr. Kipper, "It's like I'm reading the grocery store pet peeves thread, but everyone is demonstrating the pet peeves."

Another tip: sign up with a non-personal phone number, one that you'll never forget as long as you live. (I use my old office number.) Anything to free yourself from carrying loyalty cards or keychain tabs.

Privacy - security issues related to loyalty cards:
I hate it when the cashier says "thank you ms alief" after I have concluded my transaction. I don't really need everyone around me knowing my name. I know it's policy so they come across as polite and personable but grrrr.

Also, if I don't have my loyalty card with me, I can punch in my (also fictious) phone number. Many many times, the cashier asks me for it and wants to enter the number herself - I suppose it moves everything along faster. So, I'm supposed to say my number out loud - now all anyone has to do is enter that into google and then you also know where I live.

I use a fictious name/number and have opted out of the google search feature so it's not really an issue but it suprises me that grocery stores are so clueless about this. I don't consider myself paranoid but I think this is pretty basic stuff.

(apologies if this one was already mentioned - I didn't go back and read all 174 posts. How can a thread on grocery store pet peeves have 174 - now 175 posts?)

Keychain tabs! Why so flimsy? I've lost more than a few (fortunately the annually renewable kind) and the ones I haven't lost are a mess. Lose it and they can't give you a replacement - you get a new card with a new number. No problem except when you're in the middle of a "spend $100 a week for 6 weeks and get a free turkey" promo.

They should be able to combine the cards by looking up your account.

Register Clerks who throws merchandise after "bar-scanning" into the end with excessive strength (especially on the eggs and mangoes).

They are only challenging you to a competition of strength. I say you try to beat them at their game by forcefully flicking your club card in their general direction, then laughing derisively as they duck in shameful horror.
