Should you happen to find yourself between Chicago and South Bend, you NEED to make the time to dine at Stop 50. Located at Michiana Shores, this place is world-class.
http://www.stop50woodfiredpizzeria.com/ Edited to add: I noticed that during the summer they are not open on Tues or Wed, guess I'll have to hit them up on Thursday when I'm driving back through to Chicago from Michigan. edited to add: I did end up going, started a thread on Stop 50 Pizza here: http://flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=856520 -- |
Zachary's in Berkeley, CA.
Sensational! My brother-in-law lives a short drive away and it is always a must-do on our trips out there. Back again in a couple of weeks and can't wait! :D My favourite pizza outside the US is at 'The Australian' in Sydney. Peking Duck pizza. Nothing particularly amazing about it but wow it just tasted superb! |
Have to agree with Punch Neapolitan Pizza. One of the best.

A few of my faves...just to chime in.
In Brooklyn, Fascati's Pizza on Henry St...melt-in-your-mouth Sicilian pizza On Long Island, Pizza Supreme, on Stewart Ave near Roosevelt Field Mall. The "square" (really rectangular) pizza is unique In San Francisco, South Beach Cafe. Nothing fancy, just good, personal thin-crust pizzas. |
Here is one out of left field...if you need a quick slice, Costco's pizza is pretty darn good. Not a ton of choices, but when they cook it well done, its a good slice.

Austin, TX ----Saccones
Chain----MellowMushroom |
DiFara's in Brooklyn was great but I think I heard recently it closed. As far as Indianapolis pizza goes, Bazbeaux is my favorite.

When we are at home I make my own pizza. When we are in Las Vegas as we always seem to be we eat at The Bootlegger. When we are somewhere that is not home nor LV we seek out a CPK. The last time I was in Seoul I ate at a place called Milano Pizza and it was great. It goes to showya you never know where you can get good eats.^

But back to REAL pizza (thin crust): I had fabulous pizza in a local joint in Caldogno, Italy (just outside of Vicenza). Flavor, balance, crisp crust, and of course the atmosphere didn't hurt. I was traveling with an 80 y.o. old lady who was so taken by the spicy sausage pizza that she ordered a second one on the spot! Another one: American Flatbread, whose frozen pizza you may have ignored at Whole Foods, has a restaurant in Middlebury, Vt. (there's another one in a different Vermont town whose name escapes me). The restaurant--it's not a slice joint--is only open weekend evenings, and it's full of college kids from New York with their parents. The pizzas that come out of that wood burning stove have thin, blistery crusts topped with inventive or traditional combinations of really good ingredients, many of them local. It's pizza I dream about. Actually, my own home-made pizzas are getting pretty good, for a normal gas oven. |
Little Rock, Arkansas

Nope, DiFara is still open. I had a slice there last Saturday. Something that freaks me out is I don't remeber DiFara's that big a deal back in the day. As a teen back in the early 70's I used to hang around about a block from there and nobody made a big deal about the place. Ruby's on Flatbush Ave, Connie's on Nostrand Ave, and especially Armondo's on Kings Highway were generally considered the best pizza places in the area. Any one from Brooklyn have any insight on this? |
