Yesterday was my birthday and a friend of mine brought some gifts over today including:

She's not a scotch drinker and doesn't know much so she couldn't understand why I was so excited. :D

While I usually prefer peaty malts, the 18 yr old Glenlivet is one of my favorite malts.

I think we can all safely assume that you did indeed have a happy birthday!

Don't care for the Livet 12, but the 18 rocks.

I'll come visit you if you save me one dram! :)

Got a couple of bottles of ' The Glenlivet 18' when the local Asda in UK sold it off at £28 a bottle from £48, lovely stuff.

My favorite thing to do is to buy a litre of Glenlivet 18 when I fly through LHR... which I did just recently.. unfortunately the 21 yr tempted me this time :)

how would glenlivet fans compare to macallan?

Macallan is generally aged in sherry casks. It's got a lot of vanillan, butterscotch, and caramel. The older it gets, the more it tastes like sherry and not scotch IMO. Glenlivet is aged in old bourbon barrels (unless otherwise specified) and gets some vanillan from the wood, minus the candy overtones of the sherry.

I've been a Glenlivet drinker for about six years now and earlier this year I was at a bar who was out of Glenlivet so I tried Macallan. I couldn't stand the taste and didn't even finish the drink. YMMV of course.

To me Glenlivet 12 is sweeter, almost more like a blended Canadian, whereas Macallan 12 has a note of inexpensive chocolate that I don't care for. I've recently switched from Glenlivet 12 to Glenfiddich 12 as my "everyday" scotch (not that I drink every day, but you know what I mean). Of course it used to be nice to get Glenlivet 12 onboard Delta flights, but now we're stuck with Dewar's blended :td:

Has anyone tried the Glenmorangie Ealanta? I'm a Macallan drinker and wonder how it compares.

I love the Ealanta; compared to Macallan (which I don't really like; see my previous post) I think Ealanta has more vanilla/ toffee/butterscotch notes both in the nose and the taste. It's very smooth and drinkable neat or with a drop or two of water depending on your preference. Cost is a little less than the Glenmorangie Extremely Rare 18, and I think it's even a bit more interesting. Since it's one of their Private Editions it can be difficult to find, so if you're interested and you see a bottle you might want to grab it before I do :)

odd. i found glenlivet 18 weak. is there more than one kind?

ive had up to macallan 25, and ive never found sweet. i dont do sweet, only wine i do is full body red.

My favorite single malt when going for the peaty end of things. Oban, however, is my favorite overall. Glenmorangie is a close second.
