A couple times a year I get a craving for those gas station subs. You know the ones sealed in heavy duty plastic with the 2 month expiry date? You hafta nuke them in the microwave and smoother them in 8 packets of French's mustard to make them tolerable. Can't believe I just confessed this.

Grandma BamaVol is in the hospital and Mrs BV stayed with her last night - after waiting 9 hours for ER evaluation and admission. She was starved by 10:45 and there was nothing open but WalMart.

I almost bought her one of those. Luckily I spotted an out-of-place Southwest chicken wrap. No microwave so she'd have had to eat the sub raw.

Back in the day of Subway's original cut, a seafood and crab with shredded iceberg lettuce, black olives, salt and pepper on a squishy white loaf was my go to. It's a wonder I never got sick.

In PHX at the moment checking on my condo, and just had this very sandwich (plus tomatoes, onions, and mayo). It was as good as I remember (been a year or so since I went to Subway). Healthy, no, but hard to go wrong mixing fake crab meat with cheese, mayo, salt & pepper.

Thought it was a little pricey for what I got though ($9+ including iced tea).

Hope Grandma BamaVol is doing better.

Our WalMart usually has a decent selection of fresh subs that are made fresh at least a few times/week.

On my last trip to Quebec province we had a day out to an apple harvest farm with friends driving and they decided for a Subway stop somewhere en route.

This was the most customer unfriendly shop I ever visited.
No doubt they will not see me back any day soon :D

I've eaten them and they're okay as long as I pull out the cheese, although lettuce and tomato are on the skimpy side. There were a couple left but it's more bread than she would eat in a week.

Good? No.

Eaten there? Yes.

I never had a bad experience when I went for a tuna sandwich. That sub of the day really fills my tummy - everytime.

Pretty much the same with me!

I can't think of much that is more unappetizing that a sub from Wal-Mart sitting in a case for several days. And I don't see how you can call such a sub "fresh." If it's just made, it's fresh made.

I agree. The one thing that Subway does well is tuna.

It's "fresh" in that the meat isn't spoiled.

Apples and pears here.

A fresh made sub is prepared the same day, at best just before, or within a couple of hours before consumption.

A sub made with fresh ingredients, does not necessarily constitute beeing fresh the next day. A competitor to Subway reduces the prize to 50% advertising items as "fresh made yesterday"

A fresh made sub, using spoiled meat, is not only dangerous for the consumer, but also illegal

It's been a long time since I've been to Subway. I'm lucky to have a couple of good sandwich shops around and Jimmy John's and Firehouse are always good as well. The Publix deli also makes very good sandwiches.
