I like a chain called Sheetz, based in the PIT area, but goes well into OH, VA and NC now. Their deli is MTO (Made To Order). You place your order on touch screens exactly the way you want things, right down to veggies and condiments. They bake their own bread like subway, but things are just better IMHO. White bread is more like an Italian subroll as opposed to Subway's. So you can imagine how much better Sheetz' Italian sub is, just from the bread alone.

They also have a huge drink fountain (fizz city I think they call it) and usually have a large selection of slurpees.

Subway is good; especially the Meatball subway with cheese, and not necessarily on the white bread. The cheese-steak is just as good.

Tried Quizno's for the first time awhile back in DC and I have to say they were great (WOW!). Better than Subway. Since there's no Quizno's here, I'll have to stick with Subway if I want a take-out sandwich.

There's nothing wrong with Subway - just need to find the right combination. So many to choose from.

I ate at Subway for the first time in about a year a few days ago. Frankly, I tfelt kinda gross an hour later. But, my cold cut combo sandwich with extra peppers sure was tasty. :)

Mrs BamaVol and I tried Fire House Subs back in the fall. We only ordered one sub and split it. We were both satisifed, but I don't recall what we ordered.

I used to eat Subway, but that's because I didn't know any better. These days I would rather drive 10 miles to another place if I'm really craving a sub.

That being said, Firehouse Subs is my new favorite place. They emphasize the quality of their meat and they pile it on an inch thick. Their subs are steamed, so they're still hot while the bread is still soft. However unless you live in Florida or Georgia you'll have a hard time finding one.

A close second would be Jason's Deli. It is a favorite lunch spot of many people I know. Plus they have the awesome salad bar. ^

If I can't get to any of those, it's Quizno's or even Publix.

Subway...bleh...

One of my friends swears by Subway. You'd think Subway is the only restaurant he goes to. He persuaded me to go with him one day. It was gross, their BLT has limp bacon and very little taste.

A few months later, he persuaded me to visit a different Subway and I ordered their pastrami sandwich. Totally tasteless! I've come to realize my friend likes Subway because he literally has bad taste. He took a bite of my Subway pastrami after I refused to finish it. He said, "Nothing wrong. Tastes like roast beef to me." I told him it was pastrami!

For a good pastrami sandwich in LA or OC, there's The Hat! Now that's some tasty pastrami.

Steve:)

Firehouse has crossed the border into AL. Of course, we're only about 30 miles from the GA line.

We ate at Jason's a couple weeks ago in Melbourne, FL. Out of Texas, I think. Very nice sandwiches, soups and salads. I'd prefer the food without the politics, though.

Yeah, Jason's Deli has pretty good food. Hadn't noticed that they had side-dishes of politics, but I guess anything is possible. ;)

Actually, they are made to order. You go inside and place your order at a kiosk. You select the length of bread, type of meat and extras. They then prepare it for you.
You're better off sticking outside pumping gas !!! As previously mentioned, the meat is awful.

Subway is just bad. Crap bread, frankenmeat, ugh. There is nothing good at Subway.

There's a Firehouse in the town just north of ours and it's okay. The problem I've had at FH is that I like cold sandwiches and they always look at me like I'm from Mars when I ask them not to heat it. Then half the time they forget and heat it anyway, then get pissed when I ask them to make me another sandwich.

Subway really shorts you on the amount of meat on the subs too. Plus, I've really hate it when someone makes your sub "upside down," with the meat on top, cheese, dressing, etcetera on the bottom.

OCD? Couldn't you flip it over to eat it?

Correct on all accounts. But you forgot to mention the nauseating smell when you walk in. Barf.

I don't know what people are talking about. All my subs at subway are good.

Perhaps I am the only one who sees the types of bread used on subs as having a top and bottom. The top is flufy and rounded, while the bottom is thinner and flat. Other types of break, like honey oat, have "toppings" on the top of the bread...
