When I used to make tacos at home, I would use the El Paso Kit, ground beef, shredded Kraft Cheese (Cheddar, 3 flavored Cheddar, or Mexican Style), and La Mexicana Salsa instead of Tomatoes and Onions. My wife loved it. Alas, Cooking at home is far and few in between due to a work schedule that gets me home after 8 pm, and my days off, she wants to go out to eat at her favorite restaurants. As she seems to be getting weaker from the cancer, I want her to be the most comfortable.
Not for dinner, but a Jolibee's restaurant opened up last month about 10 miles away, so after her oncologist appointment, she wanted to eat there for a taste of home. It didn't taste the same, and she doesn't want to go back. I had my favorite dish from there which was a 2pc. Burger steak with rice and mushroom gravy which at first tasted the same (when hot), but as it cooled off a more pepper flavor came out of the gravy as well as the rice was very starchy. She had the Spaghetti and it had very little beef, a lot of hot dog slices, and the cheese was totally different. It seems that in the USA, it is more of a fried chicken (ChickenJoy) place than a burger place. The Yum burger here was close to $4.00 by itself, to me not worth it for a burger that only has a special sauce akin to mayo/ketchup mixture. What I had is basically 2 of the same patties and rice for $1.39 more. Anybody else eat at an American Jollibee's that has eaten at the Filipino ones see the same thing? |
Garlic kielbasa, cabbage, carrots, onion pierogies with sautéed onions and bell peppers, Düsseldorf style mustard.

Frito pie using leftover chili. Tasty and comfort food on a cold and wet day.
(Had to go to three stores to find Fritos and got the last bag at the third store. Proprietor told me there is a serious supply issue in this area for getting Fritos. Admittedly, a first world problem, indeed, compared to folks who don't know where their next meal is coming from) |

Mrs. braslvr made Thai green curry with chicken. 100% fresh ingredients. It was every bit as good as we have had in Thailand, and better than any US Thai restaurant we've been to.
It is wonderful this small coastal town has 4 Asian markets within 2 miles of our house. :) If we had a Korean restaurant it would be even better. |
Going back to Miller’s Ale House tonight because Mrs BV’s dad missed the prime rib special last Thursday night.

Last night....split a Bobby Flay crunchburger. I love potato chips on burgers. Also sweet potato fries dipped in ranch.

And, regarding ranch dressing, like most Americans I love the stuff! I can dip literally anything it, which is my answer to the "chicken is too bland" thread. No problem, I just dip it in ranch. |
