I may. Looking at the recipe, it sounds perfect for me.

For me it's a peanut butter and jelly sandwich but a grilled cheese comes close, hence why I had it for dinner.

Had nasi lemak , then a tiny slice of Basque burnt cheesecake

I have never consumed a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

It's decadent, but very warming on a cold day. Raclette can be hard to come by, but is carried occasionally by Whole Foods as individual slices in a small pack, IIRC. Take the rind off, and you're all set.

I've probably had <5 in my 50+ years. My mom isn't a sandwich person so my school lunches never included a sandwich. And even today, if I'm going to eat a sandwich it is going to be an exceptional one. So I might have a foie gras and jelly on some artisanal bread, but I'm never making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Sandwich. In fact, the only peanut butter that gets consumed in our house is by my husband, or maybe in a dessert recipe.

I’d say that’s pretty exceptional!😀 For me, easily over 1k PB&J’s in my lifetime. It’s a go to late night item when I’m starving.

I'm an oddity when it comes to food. I'm a very adventurous eater, but there's some stuff I almost never eat. The average American allegedly eats 71 pounds of ketchup a year, and I may use the equivalent of two or three fast-food packets a year (maybe a twice that if we make meatloaf, which we make very infrequently).

In a typical year, we might consume one bottle of ketchup. That’s maybe 1/2 pound each. This year was different. We bought a bottle every Air BnB stay, so now I have 4 partial ketchup bottles in the fridge. Good reminder to look at the expiration dates.

I make pb&j for my child at home as school is nut/free and we all dislike sunflower butter. I still enjoy peanut butter on toast. I loved foie gras and only ate it as foie gras without distractions just like eating caviar or oysters on their own. I don’t want their accompaniments.

wrp96 Nov 23, 2021 7:33 pm

Pork chop with Marsala cream sauce and broccoli for dinner tonight.

Re: pb&j. I have been lactose intolerant since birth so that and peanut butter and crackers were two of my go to easy meals as a kid. It’s only as an adult that I’ve been able to add grilled cheese, and I have to be careful with that. For those of you that can’t or won’t have peanut butter, thank you for saving more for me.

As to ketchup, I may have used one fast food packet size if it this year, if that much.

and of course now one can understand how someone hasn’t had a pb&j - it’s due to nut allergies. Some people really like sunflower seed butter as an alternative :-)

No. I'm allergic to peanuts and tree nuts.

braslvr Nov 23, 2021 10:09 pm

I haven't had a PB&J for years and I'm not sure why exactly. I've had hundreds before then... PB and honey, and PB and banana too. Peanuts are my overall favorite nut, (which I do eat regularly) and I love peanut butter.... Hmmm, I think a PB&J may be in my future. :) And it will be either raspberry or strawberry preserves on some kind of soft bread.

teddybear99 Nov 24, 2021 12:02 am

I was being serious, I have only had 2 types of Oysters living in the Southeast. The main ones are from the Gulf of Mexico region of Fla, Ala, or Miss. When visiting Long Island, I have had some from the Atlantic Shores region. The type of shells were different, and I found the ones on Long Island to be saltier. I eat them raw with a dash of lemon, and some mild cocktail sauce.

I will not eat those from a cow.

My favorite comfort food sandwich is a BLT on white toast with thick cut slices of tomato, and crispy bacon. If possible, I will use shredded lettuce, but regular lettuce is fine as well.

In Mrs BV’s family, it was peanut butter and iceberg lettuce on white bread. And it’s surprisingly good.

Cows don’t produce “oysters”. They are, by definition, female.

StuckInYYZ Nov 24, 2021 5:52 pm

So a few months ago, I decided to make a batch of salted eggs. Nearly forgot about them (bad idea) but "remembered" them today (read: I found the jar I had put them in to brine)... so tonight's dinner was wild rice with salted egg and blanched kailan w/oyster sauce.

Now if only I could figure out why I can't post pictures...

Just curious if it's a universal thing, even in Canda. Lee Kum Kee Oyster sauce?

LOL. There are other brands here, but yeah, this time was LKK... I usually get the can and pour it into a few jars and then store them in the back of the fridge... Usually lasts me a year or two.

Oh, come on! LKK is the best; the other brands are just not the same. They're lacking in flavor, texture and tend to be too watery.

I thought it was called oyster sauce and then changed to Hoison sauce. I used to love it. Now I only see sodium.

Some maybe, but we have a few here that compete. Besides, sometimes you want to mess around and don't want to pay the premium LKK charges.

Definitely more choices for shopping - i used to bring different chili garlic sauces to my German friend because many chinese sauces were still hard to get in 2009 Germany. In hindsight pure luck that nothing broke in transit :-)

Ah, I'll always enjoy it with certain comfort foods. Generally, with roasted fatty pork and with some shrimp noodles (ha jhee meen - do they still have these?) I enjoyed during my time in HK. But, as with YYZ, a bottle will last a pretty long time.

Not sure if I'm out of touch here, but it's a few bucks more, if that?

Usually. But I have a bad habit of buying things, using some and (often enough) ending up tossing a good chunk away due to spoilage of some sort (issue with cooking small amounts). I've gotten better at it, but some things just can't be saved so why waste? That's why except for "dry" goods, I don't buy Costco-size stuff very often. I just can't finish the food fast enough to prevent it from going bad. And with an abundant number of asian supermarkets nearby, I try to limit what fresh stuff I buy to 3-4 servings worth and only cook those for 1-2 meals. Oyster sauce is great, but if you let it sit for too long (even in the fridge) it does go bad. And it doesn't freeze well IME.

What's a little freezer burn among friends and family? ;)

I don't know why but I didn't take any pictures of today's dinner. Had a tossed salad, which no one was interested in. I'm glad I didn't toss it with dressing as now I can eat it tomorrow. We did a turkey and a bunch of NYT recipe sides that could be made ahead. Five minute, five ingredient gravy to which I added the pan drippings today (very pleased with how that turned out), mashed potato casserole (nice not to have to peel, boil and mash the day of), citrus glazed sweet potatoes (warmed up in the microwave), corn casserole, home made potato rolls and pumpkin pie with whipped cream. I wanted "cheesy" (don't mean that literally) green bean casserole (with the cream of mushroom soup and french fried onions) but no one likes it but me.

As I was telling somebody earlier...you would be thrown out of the house if you tried to serve a salad for Thanksgiving in my house. Lettuce has no place at a carb fest.
