Is The Chicken Still Kiev?

Or is it now Kyiv chicken? The duck remains Peking. But the Pad is not Siamese.

How have political or similar changes changed (or not changed) the names of foods over time?

A long-standing place in Berkeley, yes, Berkeley, named Oriental Restaurant, recently closed after decades.

Do they still serve American goulash in school cafeterias?

Are we back to French fries, instead of Freedom fries?

Belgian waffles are still Belgian but dont go out to lunch and suggest Dutch treat.

Chicken Kiev was one of my favorite dishes at Russian Tea Room. It was preceded by a soup of Pelmeny Siberia. I had the RTR cookbook and made both dishes. Good, but better at RTR.

Do you remember Kavkaz Restaurant at the intersection of Sunset Blvd, Horn Ave and Holloway Drive in West Hollywood, across Horn from Tower Records, in the space where Spago later opened at their original location? They made the best Chicken Kiev that I have ever eaten.

I have never heard of that soup but I agree that RTR chicken was very good. My mom's was a bit better though! You rarely see it anymore. I might have to make it again.

That recipe comes close but IIRC, RTR garnished it with it with fresh dill.

Always chicken Kiev to me, although perhaps not served la Russe.

I also think of Persian rather than Iranian cuisine.

But sometimes, just because the food is from and produced in a country doesn't necessarily make it edible either.

Here's an example of a meal I was served on United that was produced in Italy by Italians - it certainly shows its ethnic heritage but was completely inedible:

Here's its appellation of origin:

No one in Italy will bring you ranch dressing to dip your crusts either.

Off topic - Tower Records. That's the way back machine!

Looking forward to a pic of the chicken from Corky's kitchen!
