I'm not sure most people in the US would recognize the so-called pizza that's served in school cafeterias as pizza either .

Or olive oil. Part of my job is escorting tour groups and I once had to intervene when one of my passengers was arguing with a server in a lovely restaurant in Florence. She was insisting that she wanted a bottle of olive oil and a plate and the server didn't understand why. Apparently the restaurant didn't have that many bottles of oil on hand and couldn't let her keep it on her table indefinitely. I tried to explain to her that this was more of an American thing than Italian (in 50+ trips to Italy, I've never once seen an Italian dipping bread in olive oil) but it grew quite heated and the language barrier didn't help. I explained everything to the server and I still remember him walking away, shaking his head and muttering pazza donna americana.

That is good news. If not Italy, where on earth did this obscene thing originate?

Not sure but it's very common in Toronto's Greek Town. Olive oil and a bit of balsamic vinegar and warm fresh bread. It's very addictive I must say.

Doing a quick search, a food blog points to 1990 in SF with some restaurant swapping butter for EVOO and then it being linked to "heart healthy" and took off accordingly.

I don't care what it is called or where it originated but I love fresh bread dipped in Olive oil or olive oil & balsamic. But I am not a stickler for food rules---I eat what I like and don't care if something is authentic.

I don't care about food rules or authenticity either. I just don't care at all for olive oil or olive oil/balsamic on bread. I especially dislike when it is the default and is provided instead of butter. Automatic extra trip to the kitchen for the server. Fortunately, I see it less and less lately.

There's a place in Berkeley with the most delicious oil filled with garlic and other spices that I just can't stop spooning on the bread. So good.

Do they still have English muffins in the USA. Sadly they still have Swiss roll in England and also Zuppe Inglesi (sp?) in Italy.

We still have English muffins and I think a Little Debbie sells a Swiss cake roll (yuck). I haven’t seen it lately but as a child there was Turkish taffy. Canadian bacon is still a thing as well. I’m also a big fan of Swedish fish.

American Goulash - I have never heard of that. Is that what we call American Chop Suey on the East Coast?

Do they have American Muffins the UK?

Possibly. Elbow macaroni in tomato sauce with hamburger.
