Dinner: the last of the leftover Chinese.

Dessert: pictured below. A gift from a friend who had lunch at the German bakery. I don’t eat sugar so Mrs BV will enjoy them both.

Mrs BV says they’re fluffier than they look. I thought they were cheesecake but, no. The box was pretty heavy for fluffy cake. If you could see the dessert case in this bakery, you would faint with joy.

i went to Germany every February for 16 years and I love German desserts & pastries and food. Each year I was there for 2 weeks and I ate well because I was in Nuernberg and Koeln / Dortmund / Aachen. I always loved German cuisine especially patisserie.

Chicago historically trended toward German bakeries but I'm much more of a fan of French, Italian and Swedish bakeries. German always feels too baked fruit heavy for me, though there are obvious exceptions. (Not a huge fan of fruit pies, danishes, etc.)

Yesterday my kiddos surprised me with a gift from EATALY. The gift included beautiful flowers, handmade fresh CACIO & PEPE Ravioli, house made Amatriciana Sauce and a box of dainty and delicious little desserts. Bonus points for them for remembering that I am always running out of blueberries, so a box of really good ones were also included. Had the ravioli last night and will again tonight.

I had not heard of cacao de pipe in ravioli but it sounds wonderful--is there cheese in the ravioli? . What a lovely gift. I love EATALY. I would have loved to see a picture,

Dinner guests last night for the first time in ages. So, I got a bit carried away.

I made a leg of lamb (seasoned / spiked with garlic / rosemary / olive oil / a lamb spice rub) - left that stuff on for about 24 hours prior to roasting. Roasted to rare, and then let it sit. (I tried to make it such that my prep time while company was here was limited). I had already sliced and diced some onions and mushrooms. When dinner time was approaching, I seasoned and sauteed the onions and mushrooms and cut the lamb into small chunks, sauteed to a medium-rare. I then placed that on top of some of the delicious fresh loaded with toasted cumin seed hummus I had made earlier in the day, then sprinkled with aleppo pepper.

Already on the table were a spiced carrot and arugula salad (From Ottolenghi / Tamimi cookbook), a bowl of Zhoug I whipped up (so hot and spicy, fresh and delicious), an eggplant mush salad (roasted eggplant, tahina, garlic, parsley, and toasted almond slivers), and some roasted cauliflower (with common seasoning from the other dishes, as well as honey and sunflower seeds).

This, all served with some pita and seeded flatbread from the Persian store down the street.

No one complained.

ditto. My child’s team won 2 playoff games and then lost the championship game to the final team they defeated. Sigh.

and then the 49ers game on tv. Ouch.

Halibut fish and chips at Lost Coast Brewery. Fish was excellent as usual, but fries are still pretty bad since they stopped fresh cutting after reopening post Covid shutdown. Mrs. tried the cheesy chicken club sandwich which she said was good except that it came on a sweet "Hawaiian" type bun. Neither of us care for sweet buns.

Brick and Barrel to celebrate my father in laws 92nd birthday. I drank a New England style IPA that was surprisingly bitter. Ordered the bbq burger medium and got it well done. A pitiful side of maybe 10 fries. None of it photo-worthy The appetizer of firecracker shrimp was good though. Came home and he opened his Christmas tawny port and I crawled to bed. Woke up too hot an hour ago. Blah. Why do old people keep their house so warm?

BamaVol Feb 4, 2022 11:25 am

I whipped up a crockpot full of Swiss steak this morning. Right now the house smells incredible. I’m at my father in law’s and too lazy to walk home for my cookbooks so I used a recipe off the internet. It includes brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce. I went with it because it didn’t call for anything I couldn’t find already in the house. I also tossed in a couple cut up garden fresh tomatoes as we still have them in abundance (like 40-50 of them).

And, yes kipper, there will be mashed potatoes. And green beans.

Sun neen fai lok! Had hoped to be HK this CNY, but had to settle for the Bellagio in Vegas. At least, they currently have a Lunar new year’s theme with those grand golden lions for luck.
