Baked Beans

Anyone have a great baked beans recipe to share? I made this one today using Aji Amarillo chili powder and it was fabulous. One of those dishes where your mouth is burning but you just can't stop

It's really hard to beat good old Bush's Original in the can. I've had very few scratch made that were as good or better.

I hadn't even thought about that, but now that you mention it...I don't quite understand the local fascination with microwaved pork and beans, but it is indeed an institution. My kids love them.

I thought mine were very, very good and I've been eating them for three days straight. Too spicy for the rest of the family, though. I can't possibly remember what Smokehouse's beans tasted like, but I do like this recipe.

Baked beans, next to a plump British pork sausage and none of your American links rubbish,a decent rasher of bacon, some bubble and squeak and a fried egg on top.
Breakfast of champions ( although perhaps not of golfers this morning .... )

Eggs, beans, and coffee can be a lethal combination.

Just sayin'

My late Dad's recipe for baked beans:

Fill a 9X13 casserole dish 3/4 full of Bush's canned baked beans.
Pour 1/2 cup molasses on top.
1 to 2 cups dark brown sugar on top of that.
Cover the top with raw bacon.
Bake until bacon is cooked limp and slimy.

Needless to say, I didn't like or eat baked beans until I moved out. Now I love em.

If you had grown up in New England, you would be substituting "B&M" for "Bush's". I still get an occasional hankering for a jar along with a can of brown bread.

I have had neighbors who made scratch beans and I admit they were quite good. I favor a more simple approach, though. I don't think you need to add the onions, chunks of cheddar or chopped bell pepper. I do think they should be cooked overnight, however, for the best flavor. And that flavor had better be heavy on the molasses.

I'll just stick with Heinz. Everything else just seems wrong for what is, essentially, comfort food.

B&M and Bush's share equal shelf space at most stores I've been in. Radically different taste though. I don't care for the B&M at all. Too much molasses maybe? Almost a bitter taste.

Funny. I spent my childhood thinking I hated all kinds of food. Once I moved out I realized where the problem lay.

Second this, although I might want to add some black pudding as well.
