If you had grown up in New England, you would be substituting "B&M" for "Bush's". I still get an occasional hankering for a jar along with a can of brown bread.
I have had neighbors who made scratch beans and I admit they were quite good. I favor a more simple approach, though. I don't think you need to add the onions, chunks of cheddar or chopped bell pepper. I do think they should be cooked overnight, however, for the best flavor. And that flavor had better be heavy on the molasses.
