Try Taittinger. $30 a bottle and way easier on the stomach (mine at least) than VC. Tastes better than VC and MC, plus it's way cheaper and not everybody has it.

I'd rather splurge on the caviar, lox, foie gras, mussels, smoked trout, oysters and buy 2 NV bottles of Bolly, Charles Heidseck Nicholas Feuillete or Pol Roget.
I'd be inclined to agree. I buy Billecart-Salmon by the case (~$45-50 a bottle) and there are times when I have to actively remind myself that I'm not drinking Dom 2000. I've also enjoyed a few good bottles of Ruinart Rose lately if you care for rose champagne.

Otherwise, I personally don't enjoy caviar with champagne (a very dry, mineral white has always been my preference). I'd go for toast points and foie gras, or perhaps jambon/proscuitto and melon. I know plenty of people that enjoy scottish salmon with capers and lemon with good champagne as well.

To confess a sly secret, I've had a bottle of Dom 1993 with chicken parm before--one of the best meals of my life.

My response to the OP's question is, with about five to seven other people. I like Champagne -- especially as an apertif, but also with certain foods that other posters have mentioned -- but my enjoyment is subject to diminishing returns, more so than with most other beverages. One glass is generally enough.

One of the best meals of my life was when my fiance (now my husband) took me in a carriage to Central Park, where we had a picnic of caviar, blini, and smoked salmon all packed up by Petrossian in New York. We had a bottle of Krug (absolutely my favorite champagne, although I'll be happy to drink any nice champagne you give me!) and listened to the street musicians play. It was sublime. I highly recommend a caviar splurge to have with a great bottle of champagne!

To further my last thread.
Im really not a fan of mixing a premium beverage with a low end product like a trader joes dollar a pound strawberries. Stick to other high end accompaniments... And unless in a penthouse suite, drink out of fluted crystal.

So what would all you experts suggest as the best value champagne for ~$100 or less?

mumm makes a napa brut. it's about $15 a bottle. when done blind, over half the people prefer it to one of the expensive mumm frenchies.

for french champagne about as good as it gets, and less than half the price of the heavy promoted stuff, find some thierry thiese wines. this is his catalogue;

pierre peters and Chartogne-Taillet are really fine wines. a bit hard to find. close to being in a league with DOM and KRUG.

I really, really like Ruinart blanc de blancs - about $70/bottle if you can find it in the US.

slightly OT, but does anyone know what the pink (rose) champagne that is served in the LH FCT/FCL? My wife and I enjoyed it immensely, but forgot to write down the brand. If you know, any insight into the cost would be appreciated.

Cheers!
