My cellar has way more red then white in it (it's actually pretty bare on the white side) but that's not because we don't like white wine, it's just we drink it much quicker.
One winemaker for example loves to prove to people that his Chardonnay can stand up to steak, and that's how he usually serves it at dinners (and he's right, it can).
The answer is a pure it depends. There are times only a white will do, and times when it won't.
Though if I had to pick only one for the rest of my life, I too would pick red.

Both
In the summer, we drink a lot more white than red. There are some really great Rose's out there that I really enjoy taking out to the grill with me in July.
Come winter, we favor the reds.
That said, we like them both. I know people who "won't drink red" or "won't drink white", but I think they're just plain strange.

I like to drink things that taste nice. Which means that there are reds, whites and rose wines that I like, and there are also wines that I dislike from each category.
Grilling in the summer? You simply can't beat a sparkling rose.
Have a date over and you're sitting on the sofa chatting quietly? A rich red bordeaux.
Starting off a rich meal? Maybe a white burgundy?
Out for tapas? Gotta be a red Rioja.
It all all all depends.

Two 30 bottle wine refrigerators - one red and one white. Wine rack 24 X 48 X 12 holding 70 bottles of red and six of white. A few bottles of Port, Champagne and Spumante.

Both, plus rose.
A lot of good white out there, outside of the standard "this is what is popular and this is what you should drink" profiles. Also, a lot that people serve/drink way too cold (and a lot of red served too warm).
In fact, this evening I'll be at a little wine club release party where a new Vin Gris will be introduced - this vintage is Grenache, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. The previous vintages have made for great summer wines.
Overall, I'm probably close to 50/50.
