My cellar has way more red then white in it (it's actually pretty bare on the white side) but that's not because we don't like white wine, it's just we drink it much quicker.
One winemaker for example loves to prove to people that his Chardonnay can stand up to steak, and that's how he usually serves it at dinners (and he's right, it can).
The answer is a pure it depends. There are times only a white will do, and times when it won't.
Though if I had to pick only one for the rest of my life, I too would pick red.
