I plan on using the $25 AMEX Small Business Saturday credit (at least one one of my cards) at a local beer store.

I want to try some new things... was thinking of selecting a few from Beer Advocate's most popular list

http://beeradvocate.com/lists/popular

Thoughts?

I had been a lurker for awhile, but joined to participate in this thread as beer is a big hobby of mine.

In my fridge right now:

Pliny the Elder
Russian River Temptation
Founders CBS
DFH .....es Brew
Three Floyds Arctic Panzer Wolf
Hoppin Frog B.O.R.I.S.
Lost Abbey 2009 Angels Share
Lost Abbey Angels Share
North Coast 2009 Cellar Reserve Old Stock Ale
Westy 12 (xmas present last year from my wife)

I love hops, love strong stouts and anything barrel aged.

Welcome to Flyertalk, UVM2003!

Sounds like you hew very close to my beer taste. I live about 20 miles from Three Floyds and will be going over there this week for dinner and to pick up some product, whatever they have available (considerably cheaper at the pub than in stores around here).

I just drank a Pliny the Elder not 15 minutes ago. Awesome stuff. Helps to have CA friends.

I have a Westy 12 connection in Belgium/Holland.

PM me if you are ever coming to Chicago.

Now that is one mighty fine fridge full of beer. Your taste in beer is exceptional!

Welcome to FlyerTalk! Your beer tastes are very similar to mine. :D

Since you're out in Pittsburgh, have you checked out Vecenie's Distributing? Tony there is a great guy, and secured the last keg of Troeg's ESB in Western PA for my wedding reception. They stopped brewing it and switched to HopBack Amber.

UVM2003 Nov 26, 2011 5:05 pm

Thanks books/drwilliams/kipper for the warm and friendly reception.

@Toomanybooks Pliny is unreal. We don't get it here in Pittsburgh, but a random bottle shop gets it occasionally and I always pick some up. Same goes for Three Floyds - I usually drive to Ohio or have family members pick it up for me on trips to West Lafayette, IN. Alas, I have yet to have Dark Lord but it's on my list.

I get to Chicago occasionally for work - I'll be sure to drop a note. Love the city and love Goose Island!

My first Westy experience was at Bir and Fud in Rome. The owner, who spoke little English, was very excited that I ordered it and spent the majority of an hour talking to with the help of one of his bartenders. My wife found a six pack for me for Xmas and I have a few left. It's remarkable you have a connection - that's a great relationship to have!

@Kipper I do know of Vecenie. I recently got married too and worked with a friend to get beer for my fall wedding through Vecenie - Southern Tier's Pumking (1/4 keg) and Stone's Arrogant ........ Sounds like you did something similar. Surprisingly, I never knew much about the Troegs ESB but am very familiar with the Hopback Amber and it's big brother, Nugget Nectar.

My fridge/cellar is pretty full at the moment. I'll try to get a full list to see if anyone's interested in sampling some of the ones I have more than one of. I'm always happy to share/trade.

What's everyone's favorite beer or beer style?

Some of us are planning a (return) trip to Belgium in late April for beer festivals; details here:

Our wedding was right about the time they switched to HopBack. Vecenie's is great as far as obtaining non-run of the mill beer. :) We threatened to have a dry wedding if the reception hall couldn't find Troeg's or Victory. They used a very small distributor who hadn't heard of much other than Bud, Coors, and Miller. Thanks to Tony, who delivered the keg to the distributor, we didn't have a dry wedding. :)

If you ever want New Belgium, I've been known to venture to MD occasionally for it. :D Likewise, with my parents still out your way, I'm usually out there pretty regularly.

I'm a big fan of hops, so anything that's very hoppy. :)
