I think everyone is agreed that SkyChoice is almost always easy to obtain domestically and that SkySaver is obtainable internationally.
I've tried in the last three months to book roundtrips ATL>Halifax and ATL>San Diego and had no luck with SkySaver even with flexibility on dates.

Just need one more trip to clean out and close my SkyMiles account.

I recently booked two RT skysaver flights from DTW to Jackson Hole for a ski trip. Solid value, as the lowest RT coach fare around the dates I wanted was $450 (and even to get that I would have had to leave in the very early AM both ways).

I recently booked two first class round-trip saver tickets with DL for SFO-ATL-YUL. The dates and times were what I wanted in mid July. I booked one ticket using Skymiles and the other using Alaska Mileage Plan. I checked for availability on Continental and Northwest as well. There weren't any saver award availble with CO or NW anywhere near the dates I was interested in traveling.

On October the 18th, I said the following in milepost #18 of this thread.

Confirming that statement was no problem for on Sunday morning I had no trouble getting two BE awards with 140,000 of the "Old Miles" JFK-TXL-JFK on the dates that I needed in mid-March.

I think this shows that if you are flexible you can do a lot.
I never consider Sky Choice, I think it is a racket.
For international my usual problem is getting F in LAS - ATL. ^

is availability better if you make the elite levels on Delta rather than just a general member?

VERY IMPORTANT QUESTIONS:
Do you have the tickets in your hand?
Any problem with extraneous surprise fees?

It never took me more than 30 minutes of work on the ITN site and then a call to DL each time.
Please, What is the ITN site address?
Thanks

Well, I invited my friend to the PBI/FLL meet in December and as soon as she said okay, I got her award tickets for the dates I wanted. I couldn't get her on the same flight from ATL to PBI as I was on, but hey, not bad for booking just three to four weeks away from the PARRRRTTTTYYY!

And, if delta pilots strike?

All these great awards will count for nought if the pilots strike. Then there will be no Delta!

I have an e-ticket receipt for the first flight JFK-AMS-LYS-AMS-JFK and the fees were more or less what I expected.

It was $66 of the miscellaneous garbage and another $10 for DL's booking fee, a total of $76. It seems to me that recently I've been paying $65-85 on award C class tickets to Europe and this is no exception.

Given my recent switch to UA, I guess I'm down to my last 200K SkyMiles. Here are the major redemptions over the past 2-3 years. Never had to resort to SkyChoice, and always got the dates needed with sufficient persistence/insistance.

2x DL F/AF NTC F/CO BF LAX-KBP-AMS-LAX Dec/Jan '05-6
2x CO BF LAX-HNL-DPS return Aug '05
2x DL/NW F ONT-MSN return Aug '05
1x NW F SAN-MSN return Jan '05
2x DL Y MSN-NAS-SAN Dec/Jan '04-'05
~10x DL F BOS-SAN return and v.v. approx. monthly '03-'04
