1) OP, you are talking about a redemption. The Mileage Run Deals forum is for earning miles on cheap flights; not redeeming miles.

2) OP, you simply were able to find the stated "low" level award redemption per Delta's chart (found here). Notice "From U.S. 49 (excludes Hawaii) & Canada:" to "To Central America" in "Economy Class" is "17,500" miles each way (or 35,000 round-trip...or one-way in reality). There is no mistake. You simply found an example how poor DL's online award search function is.

3) This seems like a post bound for this Delta forum thread: "Award Ticket Success - Post It Here"

Reading this made me LOL. I flipped out reading the title at first: 35,000 miles from flying to Costa Rica?! How the HELL do you get that kind of routing? Now it all makes sense. Oh, well.

Medallions (when travelling on an award reservation with their miles and depending on Medallion level) receive somewhat better access to low-level awards than non-Medallions. There's nothing at all unusual about this.

Is this well-known? And is this a published benefit?

Yes and yes. That's the reason the "I am traveling" box exists in the first place.

Just booked the elusive business class LAX - PPT ticket!!

2 seats, summer 2014.
Air Tahiti Nui
160,000 skymiles/ea
$526 taxes/ea (

Tried about 10 different DL Plat agents over 3 hours, some just said no, some said there was a blackout, some said system was down, and finally one spent 20min w/revenue mgmt to make it happen!

In July... I wish, the AF ones apparently don't get released until 180 days before the flight... but in reality, I see them mostly get released the week or month before the flight! Last week I saw 5 J award seats pop up for an AF flight 4 days later... crazy.

I decided to book early and get one more TPAC BE ticket at 120,000 miles before the rate goes up. Booked the following for April:

ORD-DTW-ICN-FUK (DL 319 / DL 744 / KE 333)
[Shinkansen to Tokyo, then separately booked HND-GMP]
ICN-PEK (KE 773)
[72-hour TWOV]
PEK-NRT-MSP-ORD (DL 76W / DL 77L / DL M90)

Took advantage of combining destination (PEK) and open jaw (FUK/ICN) to have an extended period of time in both Korea and Japan, then will use some orphaned miles from another program to connect that last dot.

How did you skip the 150$ non US booking fee? or did you do it online?
