After a bit of playing around --
DCA-WAW, 7/24/11 via BOS and AMS
WAW-CPH, 7/31/11 via AMS
CPH-DCA, 8/4/11 via ATL
All trans-Atlantic in BE and the ATL-DCA return in first. DCA-BOS and the 3 intra-Europe KL flights in coach.
100,000 miles plus $111.70 taxes.
It took some playing and was much easier to book multi-destination with the old NW award engine where you could see the mileage requirements for each leg on a multi-destination flight.
This on top of rebooking my award trip DCA-PVG last week and bringing it down from 180,000 to 120,000 miles.
Summer to Europe (although not the most favored destinations) -- low mileage awards are possible, they just take persistence and flexibility.

Then this afternoon I tried one last time and found what I wanted, leaving early tomorrow morning. I quickly got permission to take next week off and booked it, but now I have to decide if I should go. I've been traveling an awful lot lately, and this uses up all but a day of my remaining vacation until July. Plus this time I don't have any bargain hotel rates like the Concorde error to make it cheaper. A hard decision.

Also, I'd be on the plane for New Years Eve, since the plane doesn't get to Singapore until 12:45am.
So what did you decide to do?

Did you actually get out of JFK on 12/26? I thought the airport closed, unless you had a very early afternoon flight. Glad that it all worked out.

I just finished a major update to my RTW trip that I booked back in Nov. Here's what I have now:

MCO-DL-ATL-DL-LIM (F/J)
LIM-DL-ATL-DL-BDA (J/Y)
BDA-DL-ATL-KL-AMS-KL-VCE (Y/J/J)
VCE-AZ-FCO-AZ-TLV (Y/J)
TLV-AF-CDG-AF-SGN (Y/J)
SGN-CZ-CAN-CZ-AKL (J/J)
AKL-KE-ICN-DL-DTW-DL-MCO (J/J/Y)

Lots of Y legs right now, but only on short segments. I'm sure something will open up to clean all that up between now and then. I think I have successfully booked this anyway... My ticket was reissued when I hung up, but my wife's is still not reissued 7 hours later. I called 2 hours after the initial call and was connected to the agent working on my wife's ticket. She said she was having a problem, but that she was working on it. Well, now 7 hours later I still have no ticket receipt for her, but just in the last couple of minutes the miles were redeposited and deducted from my account, so maybe there's progress. Delta's great IT at it again... 7 hours and counting to reissue a ticket? YIKES!

SCORE redux!!

2 tix JFK-CDG-BOM in J in October/November 2011 for 120k per passenger.

Got on the A380-800 for the return.

Now I just need to wait until I can add on something from north Florida to JFK and back. Am planning to hold out for low award seats and eat the $25 pp telephone fee to add them in. But if worse comes to worse a couple of coach seats and possibility of comp upgd (we are both FO) will work.

Thanks to wjudge for a nice format (although I had, honestly, been planning to start out with a SCORE! before I got here).

As an FO, you won't be able to just "add them in" and pay $25. Adding legs to a ticket will require the ticket will be reissued, and so you will be charged $300 ($150 per ticket). That still might be cheaper than purchasing r/t tickets though if you find them.

Congrats on your booking though. India was a tough one to score, J or Y. Took a while for me to get Y tickets, and couldn't get them from JFK to CDG when I did it last year. Had to go JFK-PIT-CDG-DEL.

Update: DOUBLE SCORE!

Today being Saturday, the weekend Delta updates were kind. Not only was I able to add on domestic flights (from TPA and back), was also able to add on a Jet Airways Mumbai-Kathmandu segment to get to Nepal (which I had been planning on purchasing separately until some wild thought had me check their Delta partner status). This all in F/J and had to be done with a live rep. All for the original 120K miles and no $25 fee either!

We are really happy today!

ATL-CDG-IST in B/E IST-AMS-ATL in Coach for 80K

Was able to get 3 tickets in B/E on AF ATL-CDG-IST in late March with the return IST-AMS-ATL in coach on KLM. Was delighted to get this low price on these tickets!!! I had to call to get this price as the web had a low of 150K (different routing).

MCI-DTW-PVG/KIX-SEA-MSP-MCI, all in J/F, all at dates that were exactly what I wanted, at 120k.

The irony is that I might end up cancelling the ticket and purchasing a RT MCI-PVG J ticket.

I assume that the official answer is what's on the Award Travel Rules & Conditions page on delta.com:

Open Jaw
Open-jaw travel is permitted and counts as a stopover. Restrictions apply. For details, please contact a Delta representative.

Stopovers
One stopover is allowed per Award. Round-the-World Awards allow a maximum of three stopovers per continent, not to exceed 6.
In practice, I'm inclined to think that it's whatever the system decides to allow. And I would think that the policies may change substantially once partner airlines are involved. I'm sure that others here may know better answers.

As for duration, I would think that it just has to fit into the total maximum days allowed for the entire itinerary. In my double open jaw with standby that you referenced, I also arranged a layover in CDG of just over 8 hours -- enough time to go into the city to see the Monet exhibit at the Grand Palais without having to collect our checked luggage.
