As for DMs, you get them every year and you'll get updated MM tags when crossing that threshold. The DM tags have been ugly since day one and mine are stuck to the mailer they were received on with the one exception of the year where they have the SM barcode. I have one of those on my checked bag, but I rarely check bags.

I've had two diamond bag tags disappear from checked luggage. There's no way both were ate by the machines. I think the handlers take them and sell them on eBay.

Check the metal cable twist attachment... it loosens up after a while unless you put some thread-lock on it.
