It looks like they went south of the original storms in the first place. Flying over southern Nebraska isn't the shortest route from BOS to SLC.
From the Twitter post, it looks like the southern storms came up very quickly and there was nowhere for the plane to go. At least no one was hurt. That must have been very bumpy.
Also, thank goodness the Airbus has a very good auto-land. We once landed at SLC on one of those days with an inversion layer. There was 300' of visibility.

Enter the appropriate date and time and select "KDEN Tower" to hear the landing.
