The Definitive Guide to Seat Poaching
1. Don't do it.
2. Alternatively to #1: Asking politely (and not demanding) to swap for an equal or better seat is acceptable by most (but the final decision always lays with the original seat holder)...but, be warned, some FT'ers may breathe fire at you.

Yup. And the best part is I also acquired a stepchild, who ended up becoming a Delta FA and we can fly Non-Rev.

We walked onto the plane together from the bar. I gave her the $100 and my boarding pass, and told her to offer it to whomever was sitting next to her. This guy comes up the aisle looking like he had just won the lottery.

You are right. And as another poster pointed out, I/you may have another reason for wanting a certain seat. We are all entitled to our reasons and have no obligation to share or answer for it.
But, anyone that says they will not switch just BECAUSE is being, well.... I will leave that blank.
If 2b and 3b and 4b have exactly the same VALUE to you, but you refuse to swap - why?
Because you can? Okay. Be like that.

People spent time being really uncomfortable on a beach in Normandy helping us all out.
People on your plane spent some time in Southeast Asia doing the same
People are in the desert now today doing the same.
The horrible experience of sharing a metal tube does not even rate mention enough to bring me to some of the self absorbed attitudes displayed in seat swapping threads.
