Need quick help!
Scheduled to fly RDU-ERI via DTW Monday morning. Due to a death in the family, will not be able to go until Tuesday. Booked an X fare several weeks ago for $204. Called customer service and was told fare is now $490, and all they can do is wave change fee, and that I would be stuck with difference of $285. In FT's experience, is this true, or has anyone had any better luck? Talked with 2 diff agents so far and been told the same. Worst part is fare was at $245 yesterday but didn't want to change until I was sure of arrangements.
PS...this may have been discussed somewhere else, but I don't really have time to dig through past posts. Thanks for your help!

Waiving the change fee is about the best you can easily do, and DL isn't required to make that gesture anyways. If you keep escalating, you might get them to just make an even exchange, but it's less likely and probably not worth the fight. If you have status, you could try SDCing, but I don't know how that may or may not work.

I would say that it depends on who died.
If the death in the family is the spouse of a second cousin twice removed, you might not have as strong of a case to have a waiver granted as you would if the consanguinity of the relative is more direct such as a parent or a child, for example.
I speak from personal experience, by the way.
As per the FlyerTalk mantra, you may want to call again until you reach a reservations agent who is sympathetic with your plight.
Please accept my condolences on your loss. Good luck to you.

Well I guess persistence and patience is key. I got to my 5th supervisor of the afternoon and was finally able to get her to give me an even exchange. She started off like everyone else saying all that could be done was a change fee waiver, but then she finally admitted she could do this. I am very grateful for her.
Thanks to those who weighed in, and let this be a lesson to all moving forward!
