Yes, this is monetization.

(1) correct and (2) correct, textbook case.

Mr Hudson in coach? My god man, I want a photograph published on this website.;)

When I see my fare basis for the various segments pricing out a M, B or Y, I reprice the trip asking for "P" or better. In most cases, I can get a "P" or "A" fare which is close to my "Y" fare.

I do not book my trips... I just tell them the flights I want, so it could very well be. I am pretty sure I will get the upgrade, but I found it odd as typically on this route they upgraded right away. That is what prmpted me to go back and take a peek at it.

Good luck... and welcome to what one must suspect that DL management hopes the future reality will be.

I assure you this... I will just stop flying as much or take the easiest route regardless of airline if this is what the future holds. Loyalty is a 2 way street*

Indeed; I generally find that a P fare is less than full Y in the markets I fly. In situations like this, when DL refuses to clear my fully refundable M/B/Y fare, I simply cancel and rebook into P once within 48 hours of flight time, in which case any fare is effectively fully flexible since you can refund up to midnight the next day after purchase.

And so does the FO on a T fare who was rebooked in Y as a result of IROPS.

Not if a DM is on a full Y fare. A SWU will trump full Y, but a FO on a Y fare will not trump a DM on a Y fare.

Said FO on a T fare rebooked into Y will trump a DM on a B fare that is not using a SWU.

This is a good way round this problem, and indeed, P fares should in most cased be less than Y fares for most routes, and certainly H-UP, M-UP fares and other econo-upgrade fares etc. that book into A.

The only challenge is that you have a very defined window to accomplish this at the 48 hour mark to maintain the flight flexibility, and there is a "risk" that there is no A or P available to book in that window.

I know for quite a lot of folks, they can't buy an F ticket under corporate travel policies, but can buy any Economy fare such as Y etc. that then upgrade directly into F; these (often loyal and high value customers) seem to be getting the shaft a bit more these days over those of us that can buy directly into F on a discounted fare - and ironically, often for less than what DL is charging for the Y-fare that DL won't move up!

Ahh, true, true...

P fare is gone, but F is still available. 3 seats open in 1st and I am #1 out 27....

Understood but I'd have a little talk with the person booking to have them pay a little attention to what they are booking and if it is coming back "Y" fares, then try "P" and see if the pricing changes.
